IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals argue that advertisements play a vital role in attracting people to buy the product while other opposes this because they think that nowadays advertisements are so widespread that people often ignore them.In my opinion ,both sides have valid arguments.
To commence with, the view of people who argue that advertisement are productive in influencing us to buy a product . This is because companies use well known personalities such as actors , gamers, sportspersons and musicians . People are attracted towards them .Therefore, they generally buy the product which is advertised by there favorite personality. for example a person may buy a bike which is advertised by his favourite singer even if he didn't need it . Secondly, advertisements include the information of product such as its price, size and features . As a result , individuals purchase the product if they find the information useful .
However, some individuals think that advertisements don't create a great impact on individual choice because people only buy the product they need . To explain it , consumers buy the product they genuinely need , not because they saw it in advertisement. For example a person may buy food because he need it regardless wheather he saw it in ads . Additionally, recommendation from friends and family matter more . People may trust the opinion of people they know rather than buying the product just after watching the advertisement.
In conclusion, I believe both views have valid arguments . although advertisements can be successfull in convincing people to buy a product , consumers still prioritize other factors such as personal need and recommendation from known .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear overall position in the introduction and conclusion: advertising can persuade, while consumers also consider need and recommendations. The first view is supported with relevant examples, especially celebrity endorsements and product information. The opposing view is also explained through personal need and trust in friends or family. This covers the task well, but some points are more fully developed than others. For instance, the celebrity example is explained, whereas the claim that people buy only what they need is stated quite broadly and could be qualified or supported further. To strengthen the response, explain when advertising may be ignored despite being widespread, and make your own judgement more specific about which influence is stronger and why.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from advertising’s persuasive techniques to consumers’ independent choices is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To commence with,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help identify the stages of the argument. Some cohesion is mechanical or unclear, however. The opening of the first body paragraph is a sentence fragment (“the view of people who argue that advertisements are productive…”), and several transitions are followed by awkward punctuation or spacing. References such as “it” and “the product” are sometimes repetitive rather than varied. For a stronger progression, make each body paragraph begin with a complete topic sentence and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to discuss the issue, including “influencing,” “features,” “consumers,” “recommendation,” and “personal choice.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “well known personalities” and “genuinely need.” However, the range is uneven, with repeated use of “product,” “buy,” and “advertisement,” and several word-choice or collocation problems reduce naturalness. For example, “attracted towards them” and “recommendation from known” are not idiomatic, while “productive in influencing” is an awkward way to describe advertising’s effect. Spelling errors such as “wheather” and “successfull” are also noticeable. Build precision by learning common collocations and checking spelling, while retaining the clear, relevant vocabulary already used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“This is because companies use…”) and a conditional example (“a person may buy a bike… even if he didn’t need it”). Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence formation and control remain noticeable. The first body paragraph begins with a fragment, and agreement is inconsistent in forms such as “other opposes” and “he need it.” There are also problems with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “saw it in advertisement,” while the final sentence ends with an incomplete phrase, “recommendation from known.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly after full stops. Practise complete sentence structures and check agreement, articles, and sentence endings; this will make your varied ideas more accurate and easier to read.
