IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals think that advertising is most effective way of enticing them to purchase things. While other individuals believe that advertising is such widespread that people now ignore it. Personally I think it depends upon the product itself being advertised if it is good enough people will buy.

Those individuals who think that advertisements more often convinces them to buy products are not wrong because marketing these days has become so beneficial for businesses specially if they sell online. More and more companies are hiring for marketing postitions regularly which indicates that advertising helps the them sell their products much faster which supports the argument that people get persuaded by advertisements and end up buying the product.

Others believe that advertising is ubiquitous so it gets disregarded and they are right given that there are plenty of scammers out there specially in e-commerce who advertise one product but when people order it and the product gets delivered it is more often then not what they ordered or it is made of such low quality material it can't be used that's why some people ignore the advertisements because they have had some bad experience of purchasing some thing after seeing a advertisement and the product did not lived upto their expectations or they did not get what they ordered.

In conclusion, advertising is still effective and beneficial for the businesses today and people do get persuaded by it but on the other hand there also has been a decline in people getting convinced by it and increase in it being ignored while this is true I believe if the product is good people will purchase it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a personal position: advertising can persuade people, but its effectiveness depends on the product and consumers’ experiences. The examples about businesses hiring marketing staff and online scams are relevant and help explain each side. However, the first view is supported mainly by the fact that companies invest in marketing; this does not fully show how advertising persuades consumers. The second view is more developed, but the conclusion introduces a decline in persuasion without clearly establishing that trend in the essay. To strengthen the response, explain the mechanisms behind each view—for example, how targeted adverts influence choices, or how repeated exposure and distrust make people ignore them—and keep the final position consistent and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The order is logical, and phrases such as “Those individuals” and “Others believe” signal the change between perspectives. However, some sentences are very long and contain several connected ideas, particularly the paragraph about online scams, so the relationships between claims become difficult to follow. The conclusion also combines several points in one sentence, making the final position less clear. Use shorter sentences to separate the explanation, example, and result, and make references such as “it” or “this” more explicit. More varied, precise linking would also make the progression feel less dependent on repeated transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “persuaded,” “ubiquitous,” “e-commerce,” and “expectations,” which allows you to discuss both advertising and consumer responses. Some less common choices are not used naturally or precisely: “marketing … has become so beneficial for businesses” is vague, and “hiring for marketing positions” does not clearly express the intended point. There are also spelling and word-choice slips, including “postitions,” “specially” where “especially” is intended, and “a advertisement.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they reduce accuracy and fluency. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling and article use during proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “if.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, verb forms, and articles make parts of the response less controlled. For example, “While other individuals believe…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “advertising is such widespread” has an incorrect structure. In “the product did not lived up,” the verb form after “did not” is incorrect; “advertisements more often convinces” also has a subject–verb agreement error. Several long sentences need clearer punctuation. Practise building accurate complex sentences, then check agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
