IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people believed that Advertising is successful for buy things, And some people believed that advertising is the waste of money. I agreed with both view, Because every person can view the advertisment from different view. And not all people can like same things to purchase for them.

On the one hand, Advertising of the product can play a very important role for increasing their sales. Beacause through advertisment people can attract and purchase the things. Many large organization have a sales team that perform these tasks, And these organization can allocate the marketing budget from their annual budget, For increasing their customer trust. Advertisment is also important beacause of the competetators if your advertisment is not attractive customer can buy from other resources. for example the brand Pepsi can spend millions of dollors for their advertisment to engage their audience.

On the other hand, Those people who think that advertisment is so common and no one can pay attention to it. these are peoples who cannot like to buy things, Beacuse advertisment is for the specific audience who can want that thing. For example when you watching the instagram and you search any thing on google instagram will show the revelent advertisment to you, And if you not search any thing then instagram cannot see you any advertisment.

In conclusion, Advertisment is important for the bussiness to engage their audience to generate high revenue and those people who think that its no longer pay attention to the people these are those people who are not the targeted audience of the marketing company.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views: the first body paragraph explains how advertising can increase sales and build customer trust, while the second argues that some people ignore adverts because they are not the target audience. Your conclusion also gives a position, suggesting that advertising works for businesses but not for everyone. However, the opening claim that you “agreed with both view” is not fully explained, and the discussion does not clearly distinguish between advertising being persuasive and advertising being so widespread that people stop noticing it. The Instagram example is relevant, but its explanation is unclear and does not fully show why people may ignore common advertising. Develop each view more directly and make your own position consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal the change in perspective, and the Pepsi example is placed with the argument about advertising’s effectiveness. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the point about marketing budgets and customer trust is not clearly connected to the claim about increasing sales. Several sentences are joined with repeated “And” or “Because,” and the conclusion largely repeats earlier points rather than bringing them together. Use clearer links between each claim and its explanation, and make references such as “these are peoples” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “sales team,” “marketing budget,” “targeted audience,” and “generate high revenue,” so the reader can generally understand the subject and your main ideas. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “advertisment” and “people.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, such as “competetators,” “dollors,” “resources” where you mean alternative sellers or brands, and “revelent advertisment.” Some combinations are unnatural, including “attract and purchase the things” and “customer trust.” Build a wider set of accurate advertising-related expressions and check spelling and collocation; this will make your points clearer and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a conditional idea in “if your advertisment is not attractive customer can buy from other resources.” However, complex sentences are often not controlled, and frequent errors sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to follow. For example, “Many large organization have a sales team that perform these tasks” has agreement problems, while “when you watching the instagram” is missing a verb form. Other examples include “if you not search any thing” and “those people who think that its no longer pay attention to the people,” where sentence structure and verb forms are unclear. Work on subject–verb agreement, complete clauses, and accurate conditional and time clauses. Use full stops to separate ideas rather than joining many clauses with commas.
