IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent years, There has been increasing debate about how great the marketing has become in convencing people to purchase things. However, others believe that the advertising now is obvious and fails to convence them. In my opinion, I assume that today's marketing is successful due to social media,

To begin with the idea of the failed advertising, which can't persuade people to buy things. The main reason of this casses is probably because of the product's quality and how it is presented to customers. For example, pressnting some specific product in real life without any efforts or to certain age of people that don't need that good. Furthermore, bad advertising could be because of the repitive goods in the market and ads as well. However, it depends from company to another and how popular it is.

On the other hand, some people completely assume that today's marketing is awesome that make you buy things without any hesitation. This progress is due to the social media. In other words, we can say social media and the internet has a great impact on people. For instance, Tiktok inlfenuece people's thinking like convencing them that they need some products just because famous celeberities are using them. For example, Haily Biber and her company that called rhode made a universal success just because she posted a tiktok wearing her gloss and phone case. As result, people think theyneed the products that she was using. This illustrates how media affect marketing world.

In conclusion, I strongely believe that the success of advertising is social media and celebrities by promoting their products, unlike normal companies that still using the old methods of marketing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion that advertising is effective, particularly through social media. The discussion of ineffective advertising includes relevant reasons, such as poor product presentation and repetitive ads, while the TikTok example gives concrete support for the opposing view. However, these points are not developed evenly: the first view is brief and its example is difficult to interpret, whereas the social-media argument receives much more explanation. The conclusion also narrows your position to social media and celebrities without fully clarifying how this relates to advertising more broadly. To strengthen the response, explain each view with a clearer cause-and-effect link and make your overall position consistent across the introduction and conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. Within paragraphs, however, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening fragment, “To begin with the idea of the failed advertising,” does not form a complete transition, and the example about presenting a product “in real life” is not clearly linked to the claim about ineffective advertising. The second body paragraph moves from social media’s influence to a celebrity example, but the relationship could be explained more smoothly. Use complete topic sentences and clearer references to show how each example supports the point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “persuade,” “product’s quality,” “repetitive goods,” and “impact,” and the celebrity example helps make the discussion specific. However, the range and control are limited by repeated general terms such as “people,” “products,” and “marketing,” as well as inaccurate word choices and collocations. For example, “the advertising now is obvious” does not clearly express the idea that people have become accustomed to ads, and “universal success” is not a natural description of a product’s popularity. Spelling errors such as “convencing,” “repitive,” and “inlfenuece” also make the writing less fluent to read. Build a more precise range for discussing consumer behaviour and advertising techniques, and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause in “This progress is due to the social media” and an example introduced with “just because.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence formation, agreement, articles, and punctuation recur. For instance, “To begin with the idea of the failed advertising” is a fragment, while “social media and the internet has” needs a plural verb. The sentence beginning “For example, pressnting…” is also incomplete, and the opening sentence has an unnecessary capital after “In recent years” and ends with a comma rather than a full stop. Practise building complete sentences around each main idea, then check subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries.
