IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is a considerable debate over whether advertising is successful at persuading us to purchase things or it become so comman that people don't even pay attention to it. This essay will discuss the both point of veiws and give opinion on it.

In recent years, people like to scroll on social media for entertainment where content creators show a certain part of their lives to relate with its audience. For that, many creators use to tell fake stories to become more relevent to people. That relevency persuade people to become potential buyers. Circulation of same product all over the media persuade people to become a customer even if they don't need a product.

However nowadays people are so aware of how content creation works and they can access in seconds whether its a promotional video or not. Specially young generation is now quite familier with the authentic products or the products created by AI. No doubt, people like to search products online to get genuine reviews which may replaces the product with some other brand as people get more knowledge about it.

In my opinion, advertising is now become so predictable that people can scroll through it without getting any influence of it. Persusation can't be done only by show casing the product marketers now have to find other strategies to do it. As people consider advertisment only as an awareness not an inspiration.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a clear opinion: the second body paragraph explains why audiences may recognise promotions, and the conclusion argues that advertising has become predictable. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The first paragraph focuses on social-media creators and repeated product exposure, but does not explain clearly how advertising can successfully persuade people; the opposing view is also asserted more than supported. Your point about online reviews is relevant, but its connection to people ignoring advertising could be made clearer. The response is 15 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop each view with a specific example and explain how it supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting ideas, and a concluding opinion. The paragraphing helps the reader follow the broad direction of the argument, and transitions such as “However” signal a change in viewpoint. Some links between ideas are less clear, though. For example, the discussion of creators telling “fake stories” moves quickly to product circulation without explaining the relationship between them. The phrase “For that” is also an unclear link, and “In my opinion” repeats the position rather than drawing the preceding points together. Use more precise referencing and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “potential buyers,” “promotional video,” “genuine reviews,” and “strategies,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “circulation of same product.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, including “comman,” “relevent,” “relevency,” and “Persusation.” Some expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “become a customer” and “advertisment only as an awareness,” which make parts of the argument less natural. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for advertising and consumer behaviour. Aim for precise wording rather than repeating broad terms such as “people” and “product.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “where content creators show a certain part of their lives” and a contrast introduced by “However.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur. Examples include “whether advertising is successful … or it become,” “That relevency persuade,” and “advertising is now become.” The opening also has an incomplete article pattern in “discuss the both point of veiws,” while “people like to scroll … where” creates an unclear grammatical connection. Practise accurate present-tense forms and subject–verb agreement, and proofread each sentence for complete, correctly linked clauses.
