IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few people state that advertisement is immensely successful at agreeing people to buy stuff. Other people believe that advertisement is very often nowadays and we don't bother much about advertisement. I agree that both sides have a valid point and it varies from person to person.

Some people are very selective about things when it comes to shopping and they don't think it is a good idea to buy stuff by getting influenced from advertisements. The overall trend of shopping have been shifted to online shopping and nowadays people generally purchase things when they saw ads while scrolling their favourite applications. Some times they might get scammed due to purchasing something from unofficial stores. I think that's the reason that due to their bad experience people have stopped buying items via advertisement. Advertisements have increased immensely over a small period of time either in the form of physical posters or online advertisements. This is the main reason that some people don't take them seriously.

On the contrary side, people buy items by getting triggered by advertisements even when they don't have the desire to buy something. For example, I bought a phone cover from an online website even when i had one extra cover. The reason was an online advertisement that was so creative that it made me buy that cover out of no where.

Increasingly growing number of advertisements might have caused some people to think that ads are of no importance anymore. I personally think that ads convince most of the population to buy things in daily life because they are created according to human psychology and their repeated visualisation in front of us develops a strong desire of buying that particular item.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and give a clear personal position: you acknowledge that some people ignore advertising, while arguing that ads still persuade many consumers. The example of buying an extra phone cover supports the persuasive side, and your explanation that repeated exposure can create desire is relevant. However, the view that advertising is so common that people stop noticing it is less fully developed: you mention its increased presence and bad experiences with online purchases, but do not clearly explain how familiarity itself leads people to ignore ads. Some points, such as scams, also shift attention from the task’s central contrast. Develop each side with a direct explanation and a supporting example to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, discussion of people who are less influenced, a contrasting example, and a concluding opinion. Linking phrases such as “On the contrary side” and “I personally think” help signal the direction of the argument. However, progression within the first body paragraph is not always clear: it moves from selective shoppers to online shopping, scams, and the volume of advertisements without showing how each point connects to the view that people ignore ads. The contrast marker “On the contrary side” is also awkward for introducing the opposing view. Use clearer topic sentences and connect examples explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim; this would make cohesion less mechanical and references easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “selective,” “influenced,” “scammed,” “creative,” and “human psychology,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts to express more specific concepts, such as repeated exposure developing a desire to buy. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal: “agreeing people to buy stuff” does not express persuasion naturally, and “getting triggered by advertisements” is not an appropriate way to describe consumer influence. Repetition of “advertisement” and “buy things” also limits precision. Choose more natural academic collocations and vary terms such as “advertising,” “promotions,” and “products.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “when,” “because,” and “even when,” and the overall meaning remains clear. Some sentence structures are controlled, such as the explanation that ads are created according to human psychology. However, errors in agreement and tense occur in examples such as “The overall trend of shopping have been shifted” and “when they saw ads,” where the verb forms do not fit the subject or time reference. There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries, including “an online website” and the comma splice in “I agree that both sides have a valid point and it varies.” Review subject–verb agreement, consistent tense, and punctuation, while continuing to use a mix of sentence forms.
