IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The advertisments are getting increasingly common nowadays. Some people argue that it urges people to buy, while others believe most of them aren't even getting attention. In my opinion, Advertisments are common but still some of them gets the attention of specific people, yet they don't persuade people into buying things.

On the one hand, people claims that advertisments successfully encourages people into buying things because of its good catch phrase and extrem claims. Some of the advertisments display the most relevant cases or scenarios to people, when they get connected with those, they tend to buy the product. Along with that, when people are abe to seen the promotion, it gets stored in their subconsiousness so when they go for shopping to buy other things, they tend to buy the prodcut that was promoted. For instance, if a headphone is promoted, then most of the people who goes to buy a phone in electornics shop, would also have high chance of buying the pair of headphones that is being advertised everywhere.

On the other hand, inviduals argue that promotions are common nowadays and they have no influence over people to buy the products. This is because there are various advertisment that are having same concept and same way of grabbing people's attention. That is if a company has a rivalry and they both advertises about the same product in almost similar style, the public would get bored and don't get an urge to buy their product. For example, a sncaks comapany which advertise about their chips made about of potato and having a catch phrase, "get a chrunchy bite". similary its rival advertise about it's chips made of banana having a catch phrase, "feel chrunch in every bite". This causes the loss in people's enthsiasm to buy both the chips.

in conclusion, I believe advertisments are helpfull in letting specific people know about the newly launched product rather than urging them to buy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: advertising can reach specific audiences, but does not necessarily persuade them to buy. The two body paragraphs are relevant, and the examples of headphones and competing snack advertisements help illustrate your points. However, some reasoning is not fully developed. The first example explains how an advert may prompt an additional purchase, but it does not clearly show how this supports the claim that advertising is highly successful. The second view also relies on the broad claim that similar adverts make people bored, without explaining when or why this happens. Develop each argument with a clearer explanation and make the contrast between awareness and actual purchasing more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Along with that” introduces a related point, but the connection between seeing a promotion, remembering it, and buying the product could be explained more smoothly. The long snack-company example also makes the paragraph harder to follow, and “This causes” has an unclear reference. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and ensure each pronoun or reference clearly points to an idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “catch phrase,” “promotion,” “subconsciousness,” and “rivalry,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, the range and control are limited by repeated use of “advertisements,” “buy,” and “people,” as well as several inaccurate or awkward expressions. For instance, “extrem claims” and “getting attention” are not precise in context, while “a pair of headphones” would be more natural than “the pair of headphones” when introducing an unspecified product. Spelling errors such as “advertisments,” “subconsiousness,” and “enthsiasm” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of accurate advertising-related collocations and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional and subordinate structures such as “when they get connected with those, they tend to buy the product.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction remain. Examples include “people claims,” “advertisments successfully encourages,” and “the public would get bored and don’t get an urge,” where the subjects and verbs or verb forms do not align. In “most of the people who goes,” the verb should agree with the plural subject. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation choices, such as “Advertisments” after a comma and the lowercase “in conclusion.” Review subject–verb agreement and keep verb forms consistent within conditional sentences.
