IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Advertising is a way to show your product to the public in a way that public attract to your product and buy product.

Some of the public has opinion that advertisement is one of the best way to introduce your product in front of public and this way increase the selling of the product.when the Social media was in its early days the physical advertisement like printing on papers and banners were most common way of advertisement. But now a days its not much usefull way. This is my own perspective about advertisement.May be I am wrong or may be I am right.

On the other hand most of the people have different perspective, that the public is now not much interested in advertisement.Because in this era where everyone is busy in there work, have not much time to pay attention to advertisements.Everyone have there own opinion and their own way of purchasing products.

My perspective is different.I think the people that says advertisement is not impressive way of selling products are right.Because the the product is not selled on the basis of advertisement. The product quality, the seller accent and way of selling product is more efficient and quick way of selling.I want to say that in now a days the people only buy products when they need. But if we go back in era of advertisement people buy things in advancly ,so we cannot sell anything forcely. So If we make our product quality better and our accent of sell impressive we can easily sell of product. This way will automatticaly leave a good impression on a customer and he/she will always prefer your product when he/she have need of product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear personal view in the final two paragraphs: you agree that people are less influenced by advertising and argue that product quality and selling methods matter more. You also refer to both sides, including the view that advertising can introduce products and increase sales. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view is not explained with a specific example of how advertising persuades consumers, and the opposing view is mainly linked to people being busy. Your position is also unclear in the second paragraph, where you say advertising is effective, before later rejecting its influence. Make your stance consistent and explain each view with a reason or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “My perspective is different” help signal a change in viewpoint. However, the overall progression is not always clear: the second paragraph introduces your own perspective, but the final paragraph gives a different position, so the reader must work out how your argument develops. Several ideas are repeated, particularly that people have their own opinions and that advertising is not effective. Some links are awkward or incomplete, as in “Because in this era where everyone is busy in there work.” Organise the essay around the two views and then your opinion, using clear links between complete ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “advertisement,” “product quality,” “purchasing products,” and “customer,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “product,” “public,” and “advertisement.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “seller accent,” “the product is not selled,” and “buy things in advancly,” which make parts of the argument difficult to interpret. Spelling and word-form errors, including “usefull,” “automatticaly,” and “forcely,” also reduce clarity. Build a wider set of accurate expressions for consumer behaviour and advertising, and check collocations and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional structure in “if we make our product quality better … we can easily sell,” and you use some linking clauses. However, many sentences contain errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For example, “Some of the public has opinion” and “Everyone have there own opinion” show problems with agreement and noun phrases, while “the product is not selled” has an incorrect verb form. Several sentences are joined or punctuated poorly, such as the opening sentence and the run-on after “product.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning hard to follow. Practise accurate sentence patterns first, then extend them with subordinate clauses.
