IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertisement is a major part of business nowadays. Different people have different opinions regarding the subject but I believe that it has a great impact if it is done in a right manner.

Times are changing drastically and we should also adapt to the changes to stay in the race. Advertisement has also evolved with time. In old days people used traditional methods to advertise and promote their businesses. Radio broadcasts, newspapers, magazines, billboards and pamphlets were some of the sources of promoting products and services. In current times the focus has mostly shifted towards digital marketing.

As many people are focusing on digital marketing, the competition in it has also increased significantly. There are a lot of people using different social media platforms, videos, reels, and ads to promote their products and services. If the content is not appealing their audience lose interest and therefore they believe that advertimentis not very useful in getting customers attention.

However, I believe that advertisement is really impactful if done with the right intent. Big names in business still spend a huge fortune on advertisement even when they don't need any recognition. Pepsi, Coca Cola, Mcdonalds, Toyota, and many others are the businesses who don't need any promotion but they still advertise of different channels with best content and audience targeting strategies to stay in thr news.

Concluding the above debate, I would say that advertising is still relevant and highly useful if the approach is correct. It is common but every brand should focus on advertising the aspects of their products or services that are unique.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position: advertising can be effective when it is done well. The discussion of people ignoring advertising is relevant, particularly your point that audiences lose interest when online content is not appealing. However, this side is less fully explained than your argument for advertising’s impact. The examples of Pepsi, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Toyota support your view, but the claim that these companies advertise to “stay in the news” could be explained more clearly in terms of how advertising influences consumers. To strengthen the response, develop the contrast between familiarity causing people to tune out and targeted, distinctive advertising persuading them to buy, with a specific explanation or example for each view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, background on changing advertising methods, a paragraph presenting the view that advertising is ignored, a contrasting paragraph supporting its effectiveness, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “However” and “Concluding the above debate” help signal the direction of the argument. Some progression is less direct, though: the paragraph about the history of advertising gives background but does not clearly advance either side of the debate. The conclusion also repeats the position without drawing together the two views. Improve cohesion by linking each paragraph explicitly to the question and using clearer references when moving from digital advertising to audience attention and purchasing decisions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “digital marketing,” “audience targeting strategies,” “promote their products and services,” and “unique.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “stay in the race,” “a huge fortune,” and “advertise of different channels”; these reduce precision and naturalness. Spelling slips such as “advertimentis” and “thr” also need careful proofreading. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating broad terms such as “advertisement” and “useful.” For example, you could describe brands as “maintaining visibility” or explain that a campaign “captures consumers’ attention.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “if the content is not appealing” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “their audience lose interest,” the singular subject requires “loses”; “if it is done in a right manner” needs the article “the” or a different construction; and “businesses who” would be more appropriately formed with “that.” The sentence beginning “There are a lot of people using…” also shifts awkwardly into “their audience,” making the reference unclear. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and relative clauses, and check punctuation and sentence boundaries to make the argument smoother.
