IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Alot of people think that advertisments are the perfect way to persuade people to buy things. Whereas, some of the human beings think that marketing have become so common that know an individual do not even notice it. But in my opinion if advertisements are interesting they will catch an eye of a person but if it is similar to all the other ads then it will have no effect on humans.
Some persons have a strong belief that marketing can have a strong effect on a person so that they purchase something they do not even want. If we talk about marketing it has alot of types. For example, when a person enters grocery store instaed of buying the thing that they want the start getting those which are not important because the thing that they want is mostly at the last of the store and all the things that are not useful are in front so people finding objects like that start buying those. This is a type of marketing. So yeah, the belief that advertisment is extremely effective is somehow true.
Furthermore, if we consider the second thought that individuals think that advertisment have become common and is not of any use now, this thinking makes a strong point. In this current era, the people are more aware of the frauds and know that these ads dont tell the truth and what we are watching is not true and they know that these are just common marketing tricks thats why they instead of being persuaded start ignoring the ads.
Moreover, their is advertisment for every small thing now a days so people are becoming bored with this. They dont want to watch the same scheme again and again.
In my opinion if the ad is fun than it gains attention or otherwise it is of no use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views and give a clear personal position: advertising can attract attention when it is interesting, but repetitive ads may be ignored. The supermarket example supports the idea that marketing can influence purchasing, although it describes store layout rather than advertising specifically, so its relevance to the first view is not fully clear. The point about consumers recognising misleading claims is relevant to the second view, but it is asserted rather than illustrated or explained in depth. Your conclusion repeats your opinion but does not bring the two perspectives together. To strengthen the response, use examples directly about advertisements and explain how each example supports the view being discussed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate discussion of the two views, and a concluding opinion. Paragraphing helps the reader identify these sections, and phrases such as “Furthermore” and “In my opinion” signal shifts in focus. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the grocery-store example moves from advertising to product placement and store arrangement without clearly linking these ideas. Several transitions, including “So yeah,” are informal or do not establish a precise logical connection. The final opinion is also very brief compared with the preceding discussion. Make each paragraph follow a clear claim–explanation–example sequence, and use linking phrases that show the exact relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “persuade,” “marketing,” “frauds,” and “being persuaded,” and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “advertisment,” “people,” and “common.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “the perfect way,” “catch an eye of a person,” and “this thinking makes a strong point.” Informal expressions such as “So yeah” also do not suit an academic essay. Spelling errors, including “Alot,” “instaed,” and “advertisments,” further reduce accuracy. Build a more varied set of precise advertising terms and check spelling and collocations during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if advertisements are interesting they will catch an eye of a person” and a longer sentence beginning “If we talk about marketing.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some passages difficult to follow. Examples include “marketing have become,” “the start getting,” and “advertisment have become,” where subject–verb agreement or sentence structure is incorrect. Punctuation is also unreliable: “Whereas” is separated from the preceding sentence, and several long sentences need clearer boundaries. Practise checking each clause for a subject and correctly formed verb, and use shorter sentences when a longer structure becomes difficult to control.
