IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Few people have a thinking that advertising is just a marketing stratergy to atrract people towards them. Whereas, today's youth says that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. This both statements contradicts each other but both category of people have their different mindset which is true for each of them.

One one hand, people who think that advertising is a successful method to persuade people for buying things is a creative method for their company. As advertising helps a lot for the company's sales and increases it upto 70%. Advertising is the most common way for the company to reach out to public. So, company's nowadays do collaborations with other company or industry to get more fame and fast sales. People also think creative ideas of advertising for example, a car company who made only XUV cars built a speed breaker, tall enough just to get through it by only their own company's cars. This live advertisment caught a lot of people's attention.

On the other hand, those who think that advertising is so common that most of the people no longer pays attention are also right by their mindset. Most of the company's nowadays advertises well enough but the reviews after receiving the product does not match with their advertisement. Many people call this fake advertising to illustrate, a watch company advertised their watch which had zero bezzels, but after receiving the product, the reviews didn't match their advertisement as it's bezzels were visible with naked eye.

In conclusion, I prefer that people should advertise their products but not in a wrong way or by doing fake advertising. They should follow rules like a country Japan, where company's are only allowed to advertise their products as per their size, chemicals and other materials everywhere. This should apply everywhere so, people could get the right knowledge about each and every products of the particular company's advertisment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and give a clear personal position: advertising can be useful, but it should not be misleading. The examples of the car company’s speed breaker and the watch advertisement are relevant and help illustrate the two sides. However, the views are not always explained fully. For instance, the first paragraph refers to people who see advertising as a marketing strategy, but does not clearly connect this to the view that advertising has become so common that people ignore it. The claim that advertising increases sales “upto 70%” is also unsupported, and the Japan example needs clearer explanation. Develop the reasoning behind each example and make the distinction between the two viewpoints more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. “On one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal the contrast, and the examples generally appear in the relevant paragraphs. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the first body paragraph moves from sales to collaborations and then to the speed-breaker example without clearly linking each point. Some linking phrases are awkward or repetitive, such as “So” and “to illustrate,” and “One one hand” is an inaccurate transition. The conclusion introduces a new policy example rather than drawing together the discussion. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “persuading,” “collaborations,” “reviews,” and “fake advertising,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make the writing less precise. Examples include “marketing stratergy,” “atrract,” “advertisment,” and “bezzels.” Phrases such as “different mindset” and “advertises well enough” are vague or unnatural in context, while “fast sales” would be better expressed more precisely. Aim to use accurate topic-specific phrases such as “consumer attention,” “misleading claims,” and “purchase decisions,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would make your arguments clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses beginning “Whereas” and “On the other hand,” and the main ideas remain understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, sentence construction, and punctuation occur often enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “This both statements contradicts each other” has problems with both the demonstrative and verb agreement; “most of the people no longer pays attention” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “a watch company advertised their watch” shifts between singular and plural reference. The opening fragment beginning “Whereas” is also not smoothly connected to the preceding sentence. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, singular/plural consistency, and complete sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
