IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Some people think that advertising the products to make it visible by others assists a lot boosting the sales of the concerned products. On the contrary, some people take it as for granted and of no much importance. I am going to have a breakdown of both of the views.
Firstly, the people of the view with marketing needs advertisement are of buisness mind and I do favour their perspective. The reason behind this is that there a number of products launched every 2 weeks and generally people are unaware of it. With the help of advanced technology, such articles or products are being introduced in the market that address the very problem of the respective audience and as soon as they see ads or promotional videos, they tend to buy the things.
On the other hand, a product with even more features and enhanced values is there but is not accessible for people to get introduced, recieves fewer orders. Sometimes the product is itself not as new but it has very views features distinguishing it from other products of that type. These new qualities can be easily addressed in ads. So people even not in need of that product can buy the product just to analyse the newly introduced version and if the product meets the standard its reorder ratio increases gradually. Thats not the case for a product with mediocre or even better qualities to be known by majority.
In my opinion, to make a remarkable sales reach in the market, advertisement is the key.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You present a clear overall view that advertising can increase sales, and you give relevant reasons, such as helping people learn about new products and their features. However, the discussion of the opposing view is not adequately developed: “some people take it as for granted and of no much importance” is mentioned, but the essay does not explain why people may ignore advertising because they see it so often. The body paragraphs instead continue to support advertising, so the response only partially discusses both sides. Your position is clearest in the final sentence, but it would be stronger if stated directly in the introduction and maintained while giving a developed explanation and example for each view.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “On the other hand” show an attempt to organise the discussion. However, the progression is not consistently logical: the second body paragraph begins as a contrast but again explains how advertising helps products sell. This makes the relationship between the paragraphs unclear. Some linking phrases, including “So” and “Thats not the case,” do not clearly connect the ideas that precede them, and the conclusion repeats the main opinion without drawing together the two views. Give each body paragraph one clear purpose and use transitions that accurately signal whether you are contrasting, explaining or concluding.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt topic-related vocabulary, including “promotional videos,” “enhanced values” and “distinguishing,” and the reader can generally identify your intended meaning. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “product” and “features,” while several word choices and collocations are unnatural or unclear, such as “a breakdown of both of the views,” “of no much importance” and “reorder ratio.” There are also spelling errors, including “buisness,” “recieves” and “Thats.” These issues sometimes make the argument harder to follow. Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling; for example, use “examine both views,” “of little importance” and “repeat-purchase rate.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences, including the sentence beginning “With the help of advanced technology,” and use subordinate clauses to explain cause and effect. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response difficult to read. For example, “the people of the view with marketing needs advertisement are of buisness mind” has an unclear grammatical structure, while “there a number of products” is missing a verb. Other problems include “people even not in need” and “if the product meets the standard its reorder ratio increases,” where the clause structure and punctuation need attention. Practise building accurate sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use commas or full stops to separate complete ideas.
