IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people argued that advertisement of products is very successful at convincing people to buy these products. While some believe that it becomes very common now so that people did not look at these advertisements. While i believe that appropriate advvertisement is good for people to buy some things as it gives people reason to buy these things.

On one hand, in this modern era of technology advertisement of some products is becoming very successful to convince people to buy products. Companies uses modern technology like artificial intelligence to make advertisements that appeal public to buy their products. For example, a mobile phone company Techno made their advertisement on public busses and trains so that more public buy their phones which boosts their sales very much.

On the other hand, the increasing advertisements made some people a generalised opinion that these companies are spreading false information about their products in the advertisement. People think that the information in their advertisement is wrong about their products. For example, a ronin comapany mention in their advertisement that their handsfree contains noise cancellation feature while when a customer buy and check that feature and concluded that in reality this feature is not available at all.

While i believe that appropriate and accurate information should be included in the advertisement so that people will buy more products and rely on the company. These advertisements are neccessary because it gives the customer reliable information and features which contains that product.

In conclusion, a good and accurate advertisement maintains the customer reliance and trust on the company and also gives customer reliable information.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state your own position: advertising can persuade consumers, while inaccurate claims can make people distrust it, and you support this with examples involving public transport and a handsfree product. This is relevant to the question. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view is illustrated mainly by a company placing adverts on buses and trains, without explaining clearly how this exposure persuades people to purchase. The second view focuses on false advertising, rather than directly showing how advertising has become so common that people stop noticing it. Your opinion also shifts towards accurate advertising being beneficial, but its relationship to the two views could be made clearer. Explain each view more fully and make your position consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Phrases such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and the repeated use of “these products,” “advertisement,” and “people” makes the links feel mechanical. The introduction repeats “While” and does not connect the two views smoothly; the opinion paragraph also repeats the claim that accurate advertising provides reliable information. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and ensure each paragraph develops one distinct point rather than restating an earlier one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “artificial intelligence,” “noise cancellation feature,” “false information,” and “customer reliance and trust.” These choices make the subject understandable, but the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which can make the reader pause. For example, “appeal public” and “more public buy their phones” do not express the intended meaning naturally, while “customer reliance” is less suitable than a phrase about consumer trust. Spelling errors such as “advvertisement,” “comapany,” and “neccessary” are also noticeable. Build a wider set of accurate collocations for persuasion, exposure, and consumer behaviour, and proofread spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast structure beginning “While I believe…” and a clause introduced by “so that.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors occur in subject–verb agreement (“Companies uses”), verb forms and tense (“a customer buy and check”), and sentence construction: the opening contains two “While” clauses without a complete, well-connected structure. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “the customer” and “these advertisement.” These problems sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise building accurate compound and complex sentences, checking agreement and tense, and separating complete sentences with appropriate punctuation.
