IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is a common belief that publicity is highly effective in convincing us to purchase things. However, some people also think that advertising is so common that we do not bother to have a look at these kind of stuff.

Advertising is very helpful at compelling us to get this certain thing. Some businessmen spend a lot of their product budget on its publicity. They hold the opinion that if people do not have any idea about this product, it will become very difficult for them to sell this thing. They use different strategies to make people aware of their new products. For example, they hire a top model of industry because a lot of people know him and public love to use thing that are associated to their favorite actresses and actors. After this they run adds of their new products on tvs and different social platforms. Various kind of signboards are also installed in public areas from where people will get idea and information about this launched product. This helps a lot in incresing buying rate. Whenever people go to market to purchse something, the first thing that will come into their minds will be that signboard and commercial. And it will make them curious to purchase that product to confirm that it is as good as it was shown.

There are many people who think that we see advertisements of everything around us that it has become a common experience for them, so they do not pay any attention to these things.Now-a-days every businessman is using this technique to launch his product into the market. Individuals observe that everything is exxagerated and when it comes to the quality,it is zero. As a result some people do not focus on these kind of things.

In my opinion, advertisement can play a key role in the success of a new product. As it helps a large number of people to have some know-how of product's company and its standard that they are going to purchase.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views: the first body paragraph explains how celebrity endorsements, social media and signboards can encourage purchases, while the next describes people becoming accustomed to advertising and distrusting exaggerated claims. Your own position is also present: you believe advertising can contribute to a new product’s success. However, the discussion is uneven. The first view receives several examples, whereas the second is brief and its point about poor quality is not clearly connected to why people ignore advertisements. The conclusion also repeats the general benefit without weighing the two views or making your position more precise. Develop the second argument and explain more directly when advertising persuades consumers and when it loses their attention.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a final paragraph stating your opinion. This helps readers follow the broad direction of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the first body paragraph moves from business budgets to celebrity endorsements, then signboards and consumer curiosity without clearly grouping or linking these points. Some connections are repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “they” and “this.” The second view is compressed into a few sentences, and the final paragraph does not fully bring the discussion together. Use clearer topic sentences, make references such as “these things” more specific, and add linking explanations between examples and the claims they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “persuading,” “strategies,” “social platforms,” “signboards,” and “exaggerated,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repetition of “product,” “thing,” and “people,” and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “top model of industry,” “buying rate,” and “have some know-how of product’s company.” Spelling errors, including “incresing,” “purchse,” “exxagerated,” and “adds,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, describe how advertising “increases sales” rather than “increasing buying rate,” and use “advertisements” rather than “adds” in formal writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional reasoning (“if people do not have any idea… it will become very difficult”) and a result clause beginning “As a result.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, articles, plurals and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “these kind of stuff,” “public love,” and “Various kind of signboards”; these should be “this kind of material,” “the public loves,” and “various kinds of signboards.” The sentence beginning “There are many people who think that we see advertisements…” is difficult to follow because its clauses are not connected clearly. Review agreement and noun forms, and divide long sentences where needed so that complex ideas remain controlled and easy to read.
