IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

while some people think that advertising has succeded in pursuading people to purchase goods, others think it is now common that individuals barely pay attention to it.

Advertising overtime has become a successful means of letting individuals know the availability of products in the market or mall, it has also become a means of letting people understand how to avoid buying fake products as it always explains in details on how to spot the original. I believe, this is one major reason why advertising is suscessfully persuade people into buying of products. Besides, they way and manner the goods are introduced make it enticing and colourful hence, it appears attractive to people who are then lured into purchasing of the advertised goods.

However, the rate at which most radio jingles, internets and televison channels advertsers some products may be too frequent that it gets people irritated overtime and may cause many not to pay attention anymore. For example, frequent prompts of adverts while using the internet can be so annoying because it covers the important aspects of what someone is doing and hence results to individuals not wanting to pay attention

Finally, I think while advertsing is good and helps people at what to buy, those involved should reduce the rate at which the advertisement frequents our televison screen, the radio and the internet, that way individuals will want to pay attention each time a product is advertised.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both required views: advertising can persuade people by explaining product availability and authenticity, while repeated online and broadcast adverts may irritate audiences. Your final paragraph also gives a clear opinion that advertising is useful but should be less frequent. These points are relevant, but the first view is developed more fully than the second, which is supported mainly by one example of intrusive internet adverts. Some claims, such as advertising helping people avoid fake products, would benefit from clearer explanation or a specific illustration. The response is also 12 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to develop the ideas. Extend the discussion with a further example and explain your position more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph supporting advertising’s persuasive effect, a contrasting paragraph about overexposure, and a concluding opinion. Linking expressions such as “However,” “For example,” and “Finally” help readers follow the shift between views. This coherent structure meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger progression. However, several sentences are overloaded, particularly the second paragraph’s opening, which joins multiple claims with commas and makes the relationship between them less clear. The conclusion also repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. Use clearer sentence boundaries and connect each example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “availability of products,” “fake products,” “frequent prompts,” and “pay attention.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas, and phrases such as “lured into purchasing” show an attempt to use more expressive wording. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, or collocation errors reduce precision: “succeded,” “pursuading,” “suscessfully,” and “advertisers some products” are examples. Some expressions are also awkward, such as “helps people at what to buy.” These errors do not prevent understanding overall, but they make the writing less fluent. Check spelling carefully and learn natural collocations for describing advertising and consumer behaviour.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “that.” This allows you to express contrast and cause, and the main message is generally understandable. However, control is uneven, especially in longer sentences. For example, “Advertising overtime has become a successful means …, it has also become a means …” joins two independent clauses with a comma. In “the rate at which … advertsers some products may be too frequent that it gets people irritated,” the clause structure is difficult to follow. There are also errors in agreement and sentence construction, such as “advertising is … persuade.” Practise separating long ideas into accurate sentences and check verb forms and clause patterns.
