Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this discussion essay i will talk about how advertising is being highly influential at convincing us to buy products and services. However, many people think that it is ordinary and we no longer pay attention to it. In my opinion advertising is highly successful because many businesses use captivating tagline.

Some people believe that many businesses promote their product in a manner which we cant resist. This occurs because they use catching slogans with bold and colorful template resulting in many people end up buying the product. For instance, a facewash company partners with our favorite actor or influencer to create a sense of connection so more people can connect with the influences. This leads to increased sales for the business as more people impulse buy without giving it a second thought.

In contrast, other group of people do no think advertising is important or irrestible because we are aware how common advertising is. People see thousands of ads in their daily lives which overstimulate the brain and they after sometimes they do not remember commercials they saw. For example, people skip ads on youtube videos, social media and scroll instantly on the ad. As a result consumer build automatic habits to bypass marketing.

To conclude, people can have different views, as some people impulse buy anything which is interesting or create hype on social media whereas other resist and scroll past advertising to minimize their expenses and leave the things they dont want to buy for themselves usually.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position clearly: advertising is “highly successful” because businesses use captivating taglines. The two body paragraphs give relevant explanations and examples, including celebrity endorsements and people skipping online ads. This meets the task’s main requirements. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The first view is supported with a clear cause-and-effect explanation, while the second relies mainly on the general claim that people see many ads and become overstimulated. Your conclusion also introduces resisting ads to “minimize their expenses,” a point not explained earlier. Develop this contrast with a more specific explanation of when advertising still influences people despite their exposure to it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The contrast marker “In contrast” helps signal the shift between positions, and examples generally follow the claims they support. This logical structure is a strength. To make progression more consistently smooth, improve some links within sentences and clarify references. For example, “This leads to increased sales” follows the endorsement example, but the connection between the influencer and consumers’ impulse buying could be made more explicit. The conclusion repeats the two sides rather than drawing them together into a precise final judgement. Some transitions are effective, but more deliberate links between explanation, example, and result would make cohesion less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of advertising vocabulary, including “captivating tagline,” “slogans,” “impulse buy,” “overstimulate,” and “automatic habits.” These choices help communicate the topic and show attempts to use less common language. However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “catching slogans,” “bold and colorful template,” “connect with the influences,” and “create hype” are not natural or accurate in context. There are also misspellings such as “irrestible” and “cant.” Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully. Replacing awkward phrases with expressions such as “memorable slogans,” “eye-catching designs,” and “influencers” would make your ideas clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “which,” and “as,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with agreement, sentence construction, and punctuation. For example, “many businesses use captivating tagline” needs a plural or an article, while “other group of people do no think” has errors in both the noun phrase and verb phrase. In “resulting in many people end up buying,” the participle construction does not fit the following clause. The final sentence is also difficult to control because several ideas are joined together without clear punctuation. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building complex sentences with one clear grammatical pattern.
