IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
An increasing number of people reported that advertising campaings are crucial to motivate society to buy products, while others argue that people are no longer attracted to these campaigns. In my openion, I believe that advertismenets are important to update people about new releases, and without them, they may never get motivated to explore the new releases.
On the one hand, advertisements are crucial to keep people up to date about the new releases, which is very beneficial especially for individuals who enjoy following the latest trends. In fact, Most of the community like to experience different new products regardless of they need them or not. For instance, I have heard that 70% of iphone users around the world update their smartphones immediatly after their annual campaigns. Furthermore, companies are continuously developing their products to meet peoples' needs, which is seen in many commercial fields, includins cosmetics, skincare or even technology. For this reason, many individuals are continuously persuaded by these campaigns to buy these new updates.
On the other hand, others found that people no longer pay attention to campaigns because they are deceiving In fact, many individuals have bought products that they were motivated to try after certain campagins, but they turned to be under their expectations. Moreover, they also argue that continuously buying different products after every advertisement is considered an overconsumption, which is the main reason for inflation in out society.
In conclusion, while some people still get motivated by advertisements, others believe that they are scam and a total waste of money, and I agree with the former opinion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state your position clearly: you support the view that advertising can motivate purchases. The first body paragraph explains how campaigns inform consumers about new products and trends, while the second presents concerns about disappointing purchases and overconsumption. These are relevant points, but some are not fully developed. For example, the claim about iPhone users updating their phones after annual campaigns is presented as a statistic without explaining how it demonstrates advertising’s persuasive effect. The opposing view could also be explored more directly: the task asks whether advertising is so common that people no longer notice it, whereas your paragraph focuses mainly on deception and inflation. Develop that specific idea and explain your own position with more precise support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations securely, and the paragraphing and overall sequence show some of the stronger control associated with the next level. However, connections within paragraphs are sometimes mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “In fact” and “Furthermore.” The relationship between the claim about product development and the conclusion that consumers are persuaded could be made more explicit. Also, the second view shifts from people ignoring advertisements to finding them deceptive, so the argument’s progression is not always fully clear. Use more varied links and clearer references between claims and examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “latest trends,” “commercial fields,” “overconsumption,” and “persuaded,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “annual campaigns” and “product updates.” However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations are noticeable, including “advertismenets,” “campagins,” “update their smartphones,” and “turned to be under their expectations.” Some expressions are also repetitive, especially “new releases” and “campaigns.” These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they limit precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for advertising and consumer behaviour; for example, distinguish between being exposed to an advert and being persuaded by it.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “which,” and “because.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the sentence beginning “Furthermore, companies are continuously developing their products…” shows an attempt to extend a point with a relative clause. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “regardless of they need them or not,” the clause needs a different construction, such as “whether they need them or not.” The sentence “many individuals have bought products … but they turned to be under their expectations” has an unclear pronoun reference and faulty verb pattern. There are also punctuation and capitalisation slips, such as “deceiving In fact” and “Most” after a comma. Review clause structure, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
