IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A group of people believe that adversiting can easily convince us to make purchase of goods. Another group think that it has became so prevalant that we tend to overlook it. I agree with the latter group, because due to technological development younger generation relies on product reviews rather than advertisement before buying anything. However, older people still buy product by getting influenced by advertisement.

Firstly, in contemporary society the younger generation trust reviews of product over any advertisement. Every company tries to keep a review portal of their product on their website so that users can share their personal experience. It helps the new buyer to know about the specifications beforehand. Not only it saves the time of researching about a product but also makes it easier to compare the pricings. For this feedbak feature, producers are very cautious about maintaing the quality of goods, since any bad review may result in loss of business. Although digitalization made adversiment of goods widespread, it can not ensure that people will buy it.

On the other hand, the older generation are inclined towards buying things based on adversiments because they are used to it from their young age. For example, last month I purchsed a new mobile by doing proper review check and comparison. When I told my mom about the name of the company, she scolded me saying it was not a famous brand and the mobile might get distrubed. When I asked her that how can she be so sure about it, she told be there is no advertise of this company so it can be fake mobile. Despite of technological development, a large portion of people are still unaware of it. That's why, the relay on the advertisement.

In conclusion, even though the youths are not getting influenced by advertisements, older people does relay on advertisements before purchasing goods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear preference for the idea that advertising is often overlooked, while acknowledging that older consumers may still be influenced by it. The discussion of younger buyers using reviews is relevant and supported with reasons such as comparing prices and checking product quality. The personal example about your mother also illustrates the contrasting view. However, the argument that advertising is less persuasive is developed more fully than the claim that advertising can successfully persuade people; the latter is mainly asserted through the older generation example. The conclusion restates your position but does not bring the two views together in much detail. Develop the first view with a broader explanation or evidence, and make the distinction between advertising’s visibility and its persuasive effect clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The contrast between the paragraphs is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal the progression. Within paragraphs, however, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “For this feedback feature” does not precisely explain the link between reviews and producers’ quality control, and “That’s why” introduces a conclusion that is not fully established by the preceding point about people being unaware of technology. The final paragraph also repeats the main position rather than synthesising the discussion. Use more precise referencing and make each sentence’s relationship to the previous one explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “product reviews,” “specifications,” “digitalization,” “influenced,” and “technological development.” These choices allow you to discuss both online information and traditional advertising. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations are noticeable, including “adversiting,” “prevalant,” “make purchase,” “review check,” and “the relay on the advertisement.” Some word forms are also inaccurate, such as “pricings” and “advertise” where a noun is needed. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases, especially for buying products and responding to advertising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including “Although digitalization made…,” “so that users can share…,” and “When I told my mom…”. This gives the response some variety, and the main meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Another group think” should use a singular verb, while “the older generation are” and “older people does” show inconsistent agreement. “It has became” uses the wrong verb form, and “When I asked her that how…” has an incorrect embedded-question structure. Review agreement and verb forms, and practise forming indirect questions. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
