IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often debated that advertisement is successful in persuading the people for buying the things, or other people thinks that it become common we often pay attention to it. I believe, that the regular advertisement make the people tired of commercial adverts it is often ignored, but the modern digital advertisement still have effective ways to influence the public to buy the things.

On the one hand, many people believe that advertisement still works to attract the people to buy the things because the advertisement has changed with the technology. They do not just run on the T.V commercials regularly. Instead, the try to track the personal interest of the consumers. For example, if we want to buy a shoes we look for it on the internet, immediately you will see the advertisement related to shoes will come on the social media pages. Additionally, this personal approach make it hard to resist to buy the product meaning that adverisement makes lot of money for the businesses.

On the other hand, we become numb as we see lots of advertisement in billboards, T.V commercials, online ads, news paper or even in the games before starting it is unskipable. Furthermore, it is true that huge amount of advertisement make the people to ignore it .As we see it every where our brain tent to block it .

Subsequently, many people try to block this irrelevant advertisement even they pay for the premiums to avoid the commercials completely. Therefore, this shows that public are ignoring the marketing advertisement.

In conclusion, i believe that modern digital advertisement are effective ways to influence to buy the product and still make money for the business and lots irrelevent advertisement commericials are often ignore by the people

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear personal position: conventional advertising is often ignored, while targeted digital advertising can still influence purchases. The example of searching for shoes and then seeing related adverts supports the first view effectively. Your discussion of people blocking adverts or paying for premium services also gives relevant support to the opposing view. This meets the task well, though the two sides are not developed equally: the explanation of how digital targeting persuades consumers is more specific than the account of why people ignore advertising. To strengthen the response further, explain the effects of advert saturation with a more precise example and make the final judgement about when each view applies more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. “Subsequently” does not clearly show how the point about blocking adverts follows from the previous paragraph, while “Therefore” repeats the same conclusion rather than advancing the argument. The introduction and conclusion also contain several ideas in long, loosely connected sentences. Use clearer referencing and vary the way you connect explanations and examples; ensure each paragraph develops one main point in a deliberate sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “personal interest,” “consumers,” “commercial adverts,” and “influence the public.” These choices show an attempt to discuss advertising beyond very basic terms. However, the range and control are limited by repetition of “advertisement,” “people,” “buy the things,” and “effective,” as well as inaccurate or awkward collocations such as “pay attention to it” where you mean that people ignore adverts, and “make lot of money.” Spelling errors, including “adverisement,” “unskipable,” and “irrelevent,” also reduce accuracy. Build a more varied set of precise terms for advertising and consumer behaviour, and check spelling and natural word combinations during editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional example (“if we want to buy a shoes…”) and a subordinate clause beginning “as we see it every where.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction occur often enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “the regular advertisement make” needs subject–verb agreement, and “the try to track” has an incorrect subject and verb form. The opening sentence also combines alternatives in a confusing structure, while the final sentence lacks clear grammatical connections between its ideas. Practise building accurate subject–verb patterns and separating long sentences into clear clauses; then proofread for articles, plurals, and punctuation.
