IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Advertising has become very popular in our country. This is the most popular and unique way of doing business to inform the people about the places of business.According to some people, advertising persuades and prepares us to buy things. But according to other people, It is so general that we no longer focus on it.I would like to discuss both views and give my opinion.

By understanding the given statement,I would like to explain it.On the one hand, when people see the the advertisement of different shops and markets, they decide to buy things from these markets.Today the world has become very advanced. This is the most efficient and strong way to inform people to buy things. When people made shops or markets, they put the advertisement sheets in all over their area either by putting sheets on walls or by writing on the walls in cities and villages. When people see the the information of advertisement on walls and also on internet, this persuades them to buy things from it.People think that it is the most best facility for them because they would have no difficulty in searching address of the shops. Advertising provides all the address of the shops and markets. Where people see the better facilities, they mostly buy things from this place. On the other hand,It has become very popular in our country that people no longer pay attention to it.When the knowledge of markets and shops becomes so common in minds of people, they want to be far away from reading the advertisement papers or sheets. As a result, people no longer focus on it.

In conclusion to my personal opinion,I strongly support both views because there are some advantages and disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both views: you explain that advertisements can encourage purchases by giving information about shops, and that people may ignore them when they are familiar with the information. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view receives several examples, but these focus mainly on shop locations rather than on how advertising persuades people to buy; the second view is explained briefly and largely repeats the idea that advertising is common. Your own position is not clear: “I strongly support both views” does not explain which view you find more convincing or how you reconcile them. State a definite opinion and support each side with a more specific reason or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, a discussion of the two views, and a conclusion, and signposts such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the basic structure. However, progression within the main discussion is uneven: the first view is extended through repeated points about advertisements showing shop addresses, while the opposing view receives little development. Several ideas are joined in long stretches, and transitions such as “By understanding the given statement” do not clearly show how the next point relates. Paragraphing would be more effective if each view had its own focused paragraph, followed by a conclusion that directly states your position. Use referencing and linking more precisely to avoid repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “advertisement,” “markets,” “persuades,” and “pay attention,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “popular,” “people,” and “advertisement.” Some choices are awkward or imprecise, such as “the most popular and unique way of doing business” and “the knowledge of markets and shops becomes so common in minds of people.” These expressions make parts of the argument less clear. Aim for more precise language about advertising’s effects, and check collocations and word forms. For example, describe how adverts “influence purchasing decisions” rather than saying they “prepare us to buy things.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “when” and “because,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to process. Examples include “when people made shops or markets” and “they put the advertisement sheets in all over their area,” where verb forms and sentence construction are faulty. There are also repeated article and punctuation problems, as in “the the advertisement” and “On the other hand,It.” Practise building accurate complex sentences, checking subject–verb and tense choices, and proofreading spacing and punctuation. Clearer sentence boundaries would also make your ideas easier to follow.
