IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many individuals believes that promotion of goods has an increased impact on insisting us to purchase goods while some people realized that it is commonly used and is no longer focused by us.

Advertising is the way to communicate with people, persuade, showcase our buisness ideas and models in the way that people may be insisted to buy the products we want them to be bought. Many people have positive views regarding this method because they believe that it is an easy way to attract customers and increase their sales. the main reason for this belief is that, nowadays the world has become a global village online advertisement is on fire, many people have access to the internet and they can easily post their products online without the need for paying money to the advertisement companies huge amount of money.

Many people do not agree with the view because they think common public just skip the advertisement which comes in front of them as well as due to certain fraud companies and their fake items has put the idea in the mind of people that the products sold online are mostly fake and they just skip it.

In my opinion promotion of goods by online advertisement as well as offline are good for attraction of customers and making a huge fan base. People should be aware of the fact that nowadays proper advertisement is the most needed for a consumer to buy a product because the world has shifted more towards the most hyped products as compared to the less.

In conclusion, everyone have different point of views but in my focus, advertisement is the msot precious gem for buidling a community that will spread the product popularity worldwide.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a personal position: you explain that advertising can attract customers and increase sales, then present the opposing view that people skip adverts and distrust online products because of fraud. Your opinion—that online and offline advertising can help build a customer base—is also identifiable. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view focuses mainly on the ease of posting online, rather than explaining clearly how advertising persuades people to buy; the opposing view would benefit from a specific example or fuller explanation of how repeated exposure leads people to ignore adverts. The conclusion repeats your preference but does not bring the two arguments together. Develop each view with a clear reason and supporting example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. This makes the main stages of the discussion easy to identify. You also use linking expressions such as “while,” “because,” and “In conclusion.” However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and some connections feel mechanical. For example, the first supporting paragraph moves from advertising’s general purpose to online access and then to avoiding advertising-company costs without clearly showing how these points support persuasion. The long sentence beginning “the main reason for this belief” also contains several ideas that would be clearer as separate sentences. Use more precise links between claims and explanations, and ensure each paragraph develops one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “attract customers,” “increase their sales,” “fraud companies,” and “fake items.” These phrases help communicate the main ideas, and there is an attempt to use less common expressions such as “global village” and “fan base.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “people,” “products,” and “advertisement,” while several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear. For instance, “insisting us to purchase” does not naturally express persuasion, and “the most precious gem” is too figurative for this academic argument. Spelling errors such as “buisness,” “msot,” and “buidling” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural topic vocabulary and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because” and “that,” and the reader can generally follow your main points. However, complex sentences are often difficult to control, and errors occur across the response. The opening has subject–verb disagreement in “Many individuals believes,” while “the main reason … is that, nowadays” has awkward punctuation and sentence construction. In “everyone have different point of views,” the verb does not agree with the subject. The sentence about fake companies also combines clauses without a clear grammatical structure. Use shorter, more controlled sentences when presenting several ideas, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation. Building accuracy in these patterns will make your argument easier to read.
