IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argued that advertising can encourage people to buy things, while some people believe that this is an old method, we should spend our energy by finding another. In my opinion, advertising is important to circulate your work in society because it attracts people's attention. It is also useful to get fame. I will discuss both views with reasons and examples.
Firstly, some people believe that we should advertise our work at the initial stage. It is because it attracts people's attention toward their favourite product. If people know which products are available and their prices, they decide to go and purchase their favourite item. For example, if cosmetic items are available in a markeet that are not advertised, people may not be attracted because they don't know the result of products. As a result, people will not buy things because they have some illusions in their minds relate to skin damage. Furthermore, it is also useful to get fame through famous celebrities. For instance, star or actress who is famous on TV channel can promote your brand. If you decide to advertised your product through a famous celebrity, you may get fame. As a result, people will prefer your product, your company may get fame in your area.
However, most people think that it is an old method at persuading people to buy things. They think that people will reject an advertising method. They want to try different methods. They make groups and circulate their product details. Through these groups, people get information and buy things.
In conclusion, the advantages of an advertising method outweigh the disadvantages. In my view, it attracts people to purchase items. It is often argued that it is so common but some people believe that it works.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You present a relevant opinion—that advertising is important because it attracts attention and builds recognition—and you include reasons and examples, such as product information and celebrity promotion. However, the discussion is uneven. The first view is developed more fully, while the opposing view is mainly asserted: saying people reject advertising and share product details in groups does not explain why advertising has become too common or why audiences ignore it. Your opening also describes the opposing view as an “old method,” which does not accurately capture the task’s point about overexposure. Develop both perspectives clearly and make your final position more decisive and consistent.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the celebrity example repeats the idea of gaining fame without adding much explanation, and the second viewpoint is brief and not clearly connected to the claim that advertising is everywhere. Some references, such as “they” in “They want to try different methods,” are not fully clear. Organise each body paragraph around one main claim, then explain and illustrate it before moving on.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “advertise,” “promote,” “product,” “celebrity,” and “purchase,” so the main topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “get fame” and “attracts people.” Some word choices or collocations are awkward, such as “circulate your work in society,” “advertise our work,” and “an old method at persuading.” There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “markeet” and “advertised” where the sentence needs “advertise.” Aim for more precise expressions for audience exposure and consumer behaviour, and check spelling and collocations during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional examples such as “If people know which products are available and their prices, they decide to go and purchase…” This shows an effort to vary sentence forms. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “while some people believe that this is an old method, we should spend our energy…” joins ideas without a clear grammatical relationship, and “a star or actress who is famous… can promote” has an unclear singular construction. There are also errors in verb forms and sentence patterns, such as “decide to advertised.” Practise building accurate clauses and checking subject–verb relationships and verb forms.
