IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Advertising has become an essential part of doing businesses. It has become very popular all over the world. While some people beleive that it is highly effective in persuading us to purchase products.Other argue that it has become so common that people no longer pay attention to it.I would like to discuss both views and give the reason of my opinion.
On the one hand, advertising is very strong in preparing us to purchase products. Before making their shops or markets, businessmen spend million of their money on internet ,social media and also on advertisement sheets to persuade people to purchase products. They trust the people of whole country by telling them that how a product can change their lifestyle and they would not be able to buy bad or low quality products.By watching the advertisement sheets on walls and also on internet, people are more likely to buy products although, they have no any need to purchase products of such kinds. On the other hand, people argue that it has become so common that people no longer focus on advertisement. There are many reasons of this view. One of the biggest reason is that when people are very exposed to advertisement,They started to be far away from it because their apptitude starts to lack.
In my opinion, I strongly support both views because there are many advantages and disadvantages of it.Both views have their own value and matter.
In conclusion, advertising is highly successful in persuading us to buy things. It is a special source to attract people to purchase products.I also beleive that is has become so general that people no longer pay attention to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both views: the first body paragraph explains how advertising can persuade people to buy products they do not need, while the second gives a reason people may ignore it. However, the discussion is uneven and the ideas remain under-developed. For example, the claim that advertising changes people’s lifestyles is not supported with a specific explanation or example, and the point about becoming “far away from it” is unclear. Your own position is also not sufficiently clear: saying “I strongly support both views” does not explain how you reconcile them or which view you consider more convincing. State a definite, qualified opinion and develop each side with clearer reasoning and relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body sections, an opinion paragraph and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal the main stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, and the opinion paragraph repeats the two sides rather than advancing the discussion. Some connections are unclear, particularly the move from people being exposed to advertising to their “aptitude” lacking. Several sentences also run together because spacing and punctuation are inconsistent. Organise each body paragraph around one clear claim, explain its cause or effect, and use references and transitions that make the relationship between ideas explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “advertising,” “persuading,” “purchase products” and “exposed to advertisement,” so the reader can generally identify the subject and main points. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making meaning unclear. For instance, “preparing us to purchase” does not naturally express persuasion, and “trust the people of whole country” is difficult to interpret. “Advertisement sheets” is repeated and is not a natural term for the intended material. Spelling errors such as “beleive” and “apptitude” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range of advertising-related expressions and check spelling, word forms and collocations when editing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some complex structures, including a contrast introduced by “While” and a conditional idea about people buying products they do not need. However, many sentences contain errors in sentence formation, agreement, articles or punctuation, and these can make the reader work to understand the meaning. For example, “While some people believe…” is left as a dependent clause rather than joined to a main clause, and “One of the biggest reason is” has a number-agreement error. The sentence beginning “Before making their shops or markets” is also structurally unclear. Sentence boundaries are frequently missing, as in “businesses. It” and “world.While.” Practise complete sentence patterns, subject–verb agreement and accurate punctuation, then proofread each sentence for clarity.
