IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's time business totally depends on the marketing stratagies which companies use. Similarly advertisments are one way for increasing the marketing of a particualr product.

In my opinion I would say that advertisements are very successful at persuading the people to buy things. Some people believe that advertisements are very common these days hence nobody pays attention to it. I think the products which do not match the interest of particular population may have a chance of being boring and people might no longer pay attention to it. Also repetative advertising makes it more common due to which general public do not pay much attention to.

Although advertisements play a huge role in the sales of a particular product, it is still an important role of the makers to make an engaging advertisement which makes the public attract towards it. Better animations, good graphics, and a catchy jingle for the product may help to persuade the local public to buy it. These component makes a huge difference on how well the advertisement is appealing to the people acording to which the sales increase. The engaging music of the advertisements, the catchy phrases helps the comercial to stick to the people due to which they are covinced to buy, also they focus on how they can make the lives easier for the people. These components make sure to increase the engagment of the product and sales.

To conclude I would like to say that Advertising solely depends on the makers, as its quality decides on how to attract people and persuade on buying their products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear opinion that advertising can persuade people, and you acknowledge the opposing view that its ubiquity can make audiences ignore it. The explanation that irrelevant or repetitive advertisements may become boring is relevant, while the examples of animation, graphics and jingles help explain how engaging adverts can influence buyers. However, the two views are not explored equally: the first is discussed briefly, and the essay mainly develops ways advertisers can make campaigns effective. The conclusion repeats your position but does not add much to the discussion. To strengthen the response, explain more fully why people may still buy products despite seeing many adverts, and develop the contrast between the two views with clearer reasoning or a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, discussion paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally remain on the topic. Linking expressions such as “Although” and “To conclude” help signal relationships between sections. However, progression within the main body is sometimes repetitive: the points about catchy music, phrases and engagement overlap, and the final sentences repeat that these features increase sales. Some connections are also unclear, particularly “These component makes a huge difference … according to which the sales increase,” where the relationship between the ideas is difficult to follow. Organise each paragraph around one distinct point, use pronouns with clear references, and remove repeated claims so that the argument develops more steadily.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “advertisements,” “persuading,” “engaging,” “catchy jingle” and “sales,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts to use more specific language about advertising techniques. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are awkward, such as “increasing the marketing of a particular product,” “makes the public attract towards it” and “stick to the people.” Spelling errors, including “stratagies,” “repetative” and “comercial,” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations such as “promote a product,” “attract consumers” and “remain memorable,” and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a relative clause in “which makes the public attract towards it.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but control is inconsistent, especially in longer sentences. For example, “These component makes” has a number-agreement error, while “the catchy phrases helps” also mismatches subject and verb. The sentence beginning “The engaging music…” joins several ideas without clear punctuation, making its structure difficult to follow. Practise checking singular and plural subjects against their verbs, and divide long sentences when they contain several separate claims. More accurate control of these patterns would make your argument easier to read.
