IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Opinions differ based on the consumer experience. Advertisement could be the only source to reach your consumer base but if those advertisement are bombard then its effect might not be as good as it was in past. In my opinion, creative advertisements are still relevant nowadays to peruse consumer for buying things.

Digital platform has provided a way to show your advertisement frequently and more effectively. Some companies use these features to give personalize feed to their consumer for their needs. Eventually giving consumer confidence in the product and encouraging them to purchase that product. In addition, advertisements might only way to reach your customers and give them idea what type of services you provide or what products you sell. Also there might be many competitors for your product so a creative campaign which is informative and gives clear idea of your product might be able to grab attention of consumer and can reach to larger audience.

Furthermore, some people might think that advertisements might not be as effective as it was before, simply because the advertising done nowadays are common and people may get tired of seeing same thing repeatedly. People loose interest simply because they are spammed with emails or same feeds about product's advertisements. For example if someone does not want to buy clothes then why would they look into a clothing advertisements, overall reducing the effect of advertisements.

In conclusion, in my opinion creative and effective advertisements campaigns can still reach to decent number of consumer. The effect might not be as good as it was before but it is only way to give consumer confidence in the product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position: creative advertising can still persuade consumers, although repeated exposure may reduce its impact. The first body paragraph explains how targeted digital feeds and informative campaigns can build confidence and attract customers; the second gives a relevant reason people may ignore advertising, supported by the clothing example. This covers the task, but the two sides are not developed equally: the case for advertising’s persuasive success receives more explanation, while the opposing view is mainly about repetition and irrelevant ads. The conclusion also repeats your position rather than drawing the discussion together. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how advertising changes purchasing decisions and acknowledge when frequent exposure becomes ineffective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from digital targeting to advertising’s informational role is generally understandable, and signposts such as “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” help identify the stages of the argument. However, connections between some sentences are loose: “Eventually giving consumer confidence” is a fragment, and “In addition” and “Also” introduce points without clearly showing how they relate. Repeated references to “advertisements” and “consumer” also make the flow feel mechanical, while “that product” is not always a precise reference. Use clearer topic sentences and link each example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “personalize feed,” “competitors,” “creative campaign,” “grab attention,” and “spam.” These choices show an attempt to discuss modern advertising rather than relying only on basic terms. However, several word-choice, form, and spelling errors reduce precision: “peruse consumer” does not express persuading consumers, “bombard” is used in the wrong form, and “loose interest” should be “lose interest.” Phrases such as “decent number of consumer” and “same feeds about product’s advertisements” are also unnatural or unclear. Build accuracy with common collocations and check spelling and plural forms; this will make your ideas easier to follow without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional construction (“if those advertisement are bombard then its effect might not be as good”) and a reason clause beginning “simply because.” This gives the response some structural variety, but errors occur across the writing and sometimes make relationships between ideas harder to follow. For example, “those advertisement are” has a number-agreement problem, “advertisements might only way” is missing a verb, and “Eventually giving consumer confidence” is a sentence fragment. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and verb forms, as in “the advertising done nowadays are common.” Practise checking each sentence for a complete verb, subject–verb agreement, and consistent singular or plural forms.
