IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Advertising is successful to attract consumers to buy things. While some indiviuals think people don't pay attention to advertisements. In my view, companies play strategically by giving multiple offers on the products through advertising them on large scale.
On the one hand, advertisement of products can also be beneficial for companies as well as for consumers, companies will get profit and consumers will get goods in cheap prices. As a result, it will also be useful for economical and market growth. It will also help companies to expand their business and brand name in the market. To quote an example, some companies have a marketing strategies to sell products. They sells products in offer such as buy 2 get 1 free or buy 3 in $200.
On the other hand, some individuals don't pay attention to the advertisements. They think that product may have cheap quality or it is about to get expired, which is why companies are selling it in offers. As a result, they prefer to stick on old products which they are usually using. People also think that companies are paying huge amount to the influencers to advertise their product for brand name through marketing strategies. A real time example at my home, if i prefer to wear clothes from a particular brand name and other company is giving that same product in offer such as buy three in the same price. I would rather prefer to stick to my original product due to quality issues.
In my opinion, companies are expanding their business without thinking about the quality and quantity of the products to build the same of their brand and achieve profits.
In conclusion, government should ban such companies and take a quality check on the products. They should make some strict laws for such companies selling low quality products and these advertisements should also be banned.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views: the first body paragraph explains how offers can benefit companies and consumers, while the second gives reasons some people distrust advertisements. Your opinion is also present, particularly in the final body paragraph and conclusion. However, the position is not fully consistent: you initially say companies use advertising strategically, but later focus on poor product quality and call for advertising to be banned. The discussion of why advertising persuades people is limited, and several points—such as market growth and companies’ profits—are asserted rather than explained. Develop each side with clearer reasoning and make your own view explicit and consistent from the introduction through the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, an opinion paragraph and a conclusion. Phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first body paragraph moves from consumer benefits to business expansion and then to sales offers without showing how each point connects. The conclusion introduces government bans and quality checks, which have not been developed earlier. Some linking phrases are also used mechanically. Organise each paragraph around one main idea, explain the connection between examples and claims, and ensure the conclusion follows from the argument already presented.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “consumers,” “influencers,” “quality issues” and “marketing strategies,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “successful to attract consumers,” “cheap prices,” “expand their business and brand name,” and “stick on old products.” There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “indivuals” and “strategies” in “a marketing strategies.” These issues make parts of the response less precise. Build a wider set of natural advertising-related collocations and check spelling and word forms; for example, describe a campaign as “persuasive” or a product as “discounted” rather than relying repeatedly on “offers.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which is why companies are selling it in offers” and a conditional example beginning “if I prefer to wear clothes…”. However, the range is limited, and complex attempts often contain errors that make the writing less clear. For example, “While some individuals think people don't pay attention to advertisements” is a fragment, and “companies will get profit and consumers will get goods” joins two independent clauses with a comma. Subject–verb agreement is also inconsistent in “They sells products,” while “a real time example at my home” leads into an incomplete sentence structure. Practise complete sentence construction, agreement, articles and punctuation, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
