IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowdays, there is an argument over the marketing being very successful at making us buy things while the other thinks its not an attention anymore. In my opinion, the marketting is playing a successful role in provoking us to buy things. In this essay, im going to explain both ideas with reaons and explannation.
Marketting is a diverse and the most approchable content even in the digital market. One of the reason behind an idea of it being a successful at provoking us to buy things is the way they are presenting it. they make it seem quite attractive and choose a well know actor or a well known personality to advertise it for them. Suppose, if its a perfume advertisement, and it is run by a famous actor. The amount of fans of that particular celebrity will enhance the product margin in the market.
Furthermore, the idea of the advertiments being so common that nobody pays attention to it. It is because nobody is watching ads nowadays. They either skip it or mute them because they tend to be very noisy. People usually install the ad blocking apps to avoid them. The ads that come between the dramas and youtube videos are usually not seen as some of them bought premium versions which automatically blocks ads.
As the technology is diversing, the advertising companies are doing a great job globally, allowing everyone to see the products that are worth buying. Without advertisments, just like in the past, we will not be able to know about any new products launching.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state your position clearly: advertising can persuade people to buy, and you believe it remains successful. The celebrity-perfume example supports the first view, while ad-skipping, muting, and blockers explain why some people ignore advertising. These are relevant points, but the two sides are not developed equally: the first view has a specific example, whereas the second is mostly a list of ways people avoid ads. Your conclusion also focuses on advertising’s value in informing people about new products rather than directly weighing how successful it is at persuading consumers. Develop the counter-view with a clearer explanation and finish by comparing the two arguments to reinforce your opinion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding paragraph. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “As the technology is diversing” help signal movement between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the second body paragraph begins with an awkwardly framed claim and then moves quickly through skipping, muting, blockers, and premium subscriptions without showing how these points connect. The final paragraph introduces a new point about product information rather than clearly synthesising the discussion. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main claim, then explain and illustrate it in a logical sequence; make references such as “it” and “them” more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “ad blocking apps,” “premium versions,” “celebrity,” and “product margin,” and you attempt phrases such as “provoking us to buy things.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas, but the range and control are limited by repeated use of “advertising,” “ads,” and “buy things,” as well as several inaccurate or unnatural choices. For example, “the marketting” is not the intended term in context, “approchable content” does not clearly express your meaning, and “product margin” is not a natural way to describe increased sales. Frequent spelling errors, including “Nowdays,” “advertiments,” and “explannation,” also make the writing less polished. Choose precise collocations and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a conditional example beginning “Suppose, if it’s a perfume advertisement” and a sentence explaining that fans may increase a product’s market performance. However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “One of the reason … is the way they are presenting it,” where the subject and verb pattern are not controlled, and “The ads … are usually not seen as some of them bought premium versions,” where the connection between clauses is unclear. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and capitalisation, such as “they make it seem” after a full stop. Practise accurate clause construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
