IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Advertising plays a significant role in modern society, influencing people's purchasing decisions in various ways. While some people believe that advertisements are highly effective in convincing consumers to buy products, others argue that their widespread presence has made people less intersted in them. In my opinion, although people often ignore advertisements, they still have a considerable influence on consumer behaviour.

On the one hand, advertising can be extremely successful in persuading people to purchase products. Companies use attractive images, emotional messages, and celebrity endorsements to capture consumers attention. For example, when a famous actor promotes a particular smartphone, fans may feel encourage to buy the same model, even if their current phones are still in good condition.

Furthermore, advertisements inform customers about new products, special offers, and technologycal developments. As a result, effective advertising can increase sales and help businesses establish a strong brand identity.

On the other hand some people believe that advertising has become so common that it no longer attracts much attention. Nowadays, people encourage advertisements almost everywhere, including television, social media, websites, and public transport. Consequently, consumers may become tired of seeing similar promotional messages repeatedly. For instance, many internet users skip advertisements on YouTube or scroll past sponsored posts on Facebook without reading them.In addition, people have become more cautious about advertising because some companies exaggerate the benefits of their products. Therefore, excessive advertising does not always achieve its intended purpose.

In my view, both arguments are reasonable, but I believe that advertising remains influential when it is creative, relevant, and trustworthy,. Although people may ignore ordinary advertisements, a well-designed campaign can still attract attention and affect their purchasing decisions. However, businesses should avoid overwhelming consumers with repetitive messages and should provide accurate information about their products.

In conclusion, while the excessive use of advertising may cause people to pay less atte

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear opinion: advertising can be ignored when it is repetitive, yet creative and trustworthy campaigns remain influential. The examples of celebrity endorsements, product information, and skipped online adverts are relevant and help explain each side. This meets the task well, but some points are asserted more than developed. For instance, you say advertising helps businesses build a strong brand identity without explaining how this affects consumers, and the concern about exaggerated claims could be linked more directly to reduced trust or purchasing decisions. The conclusion is cut off after “pay less atte…”, so it does not fully restate the final position. Develop the supporting explanations and ensure the ending is complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In my view” makes the progression easy to follow. However, some linking is mechanical, and several transitions could show the relationship between ideas more precisely. The final paragraph is incomplete, which interrupts the overall progression and leaves the conclusion unfinished. There are also spacing and punctuation problems around connectors and sentence boundaries, such as “reading them.In addition” and “On the other hand some people”. Use transitions selectively, connect examples explicitly to the claims they support, and proofread paragraph endings and punctuation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “celebrity endorsements,” “promotional messages,” “brand identity,” and “purchasing decisions.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and phrases such as “exaggerate the benefits” are appropriate to the discussion. However, some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “intersted,” “technologycal,” and “encourage advertisements” appear where “encounter advertisements” is intended. There are also awkward or imprecise phrases, including “feel encourage” and “ordinary advertisements.” Aim for more accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. Greater precision in describing how advertising affects consumer behaviour would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession clause in “although people often ignore advertisements” and a conditional example beginning “when a famous actor promotes…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation slips are present. For example, “fans may feel encourage to buy” needs a past participle (“encouraged”), and “capture consumers attention” needs a possessive apostrophe. The sentence beginning “Although people may ignore ordinary advertisements” is joined to the main clause appropriately, but the conclusion is left unfinished, so its structure cannot be completed. Review verb forms, possessives, and sentence boundaries, and proofread punctuation while retaining your varied sentence patterns.
