IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is the talk of the town that, commercials subtantialy accomplished the goal to convince the people to purchase, while others argue that publicity is become part of routine so we no longer notice it.Both groups have thier argument supported by convincing arguments, we sill discuss both opinions in this essay.

One group that believe that marketing companies achieved thier objective that people considers to buy.As in recent times evry other individual from any age group is shoping frequently, because of the social groups we belongs to, the idolls or celberities we admire,Peer groups etc all techniques are being used by the sellers to make our mind to shop and consume thier goods. For instance one kid follows messi as his footballing idol addidas uses him in marketing startegies. His videos using the same shoes or mercahndise of their brand. The kid eithrer believe that its the shoes taht makes messi so good or he justr want to show resemblance to wear merchandise like him. These instances makes the indiviuals believe that advertisments make people to decide to make purcahse successfully.

However certain people oppose the opinion by saying that these marketing adds are so frequent, that it has became part of our normal life and no longer appeal us.Daily routine at home on tv, social media signboards etc everywhere is marketing going on. which now hardly gets our intrest and we do shop only when we need to.Public mostly pass these marketing stuff like in markets someone want to guve us leaflets ,we avoid to take any, moreover on phone we skips adds becayse its no longer important.

for instance we see many advetrtised of different car companies but we buy when we need one and we select the one which meets our desire and needs.

To sum up,its evident that certain people dont find these colorful commercial appealing and dont buy stuffs on other opinion, however commercial places are seen congested and busy , All these buyers are one way or another attracted by these marketings, however few will be seen in local buisnesses where mostly those visits who are not moved by these camapins .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and give a concluding position, so the response addresses the main parts of the prompt. The Messi example helps explain how celebrity endorsements can influence a child’s purchasing decisions, and the car example supports the idea that frequent advertising may be ignored. However, the position is not consistently clear: the conclusion says some people are not persuaded, but also suggests that buyers are attracted by advertising, without clearly stating which view you find more convincing. Several claims, such as people shopping because of social groups, are asserted rather than fully explained. Develop each side with a clearer chain of reasoning and state your own opinion directly in the introduction and conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. This helps readers identify the main stages of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, particularly in the first body paragraph, where social groups, celebrities, and the Messi example are crowded together. Linking phrases such as “However” and “For instance” are useful, but some connections are mechanical or unclear; for example, “Both groups have their argument supported by convincing arguments” does not clearly introduce the essay’s direction. The conclusion also combines contrasting points without resolving them. Use clearer topic sentences, separate related ideas, and make references between sentences more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “marketing strategies,” “merchandise,” “appeal,” and “attracted,” and the examples show an effort to discuss advertising in varied terms. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “marketing,” “commercials,” and “buy,” while inaccurate word choice and spelling sometimes make meaning harder to understand. Examples include “commercials substantially accomplished the goal,” “marketing adds,” and “these marketings”; these are not natural expressions in this context. There are also many spelling errors, such as “subtantialy,” “celberities,” and “advetrtised.” Build a reliable set of topic collocations and check spelling carefully so your vocabulary communicates ideas precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including explanations with “because” and examples introduced by “for instance.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries frequently make the reader work to understand the meaning. For example, “publicity is become part of routine” has an incorrect verb construction, while “One group that believe” and “These instances makes” show agreement problems. Several sentences run together, as in the opening and the Messi example, and the sentence beginning “Daily routine at home” is incomplete. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check each sentence’s punctuation.
