IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Advertisments are made to attract the targetted buyers or consumers. Every company is always ready spend a specific amount of money on advertising the product. They also hire some experts of this field to increase sell. We usually see advertisements and commercials in the form of posters, paintings, or the television ads. Some people think that the advertising companies are convincing us to buy the product while other group of people keep different opinion regarding this as they say that advertisments have lost the attention as being more and more common. Both groups are right on their own because both have different mentality. The people who say that it is about convincing are right on their position as in the advertisemnts, the multinational companies hire big celebrety, sportsman or a famous person to film the ad. This factor attracts a lot of costumers specially the people who blindly follow that celebrity or that sportsperson. If someone blindly follows Tom Cruise and he watches the advertisment of a dress on the television or social media, he would definitely buy that very product even if he likes the product or not but he likes the man in the ad. On the other hand, the second group thinks in a very different way, as per the second group, such ads have lost their credibility because of the number of ads on daily basis so people no longer pay attention to such things. Such people likes to skip the ads or commercials watching any sports, movie, or a video on social media.
In my opinion, both statements are true, if an advertisement contains my favourite person, I would never ignore it, i'll try to purchase that product but if the ad is not made for me or I am not one of the targeted costumers, i would prefer skipping it. The question is that how costumers are targeted? For example, if there's is an expensive product like a watch, or any expensive clothing, it'll never be advertised in cricket match or on any social media platform. They will advertise it in a Tennis Match where they can target the rich people and then they pay high amount for Tennis players to make and ad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear personal position: advertising can influence people when it features someone they admire, while less relevant ads are easy to ignore. The celebrity example and the contrast between targeted and general advertising are relevant, and your final discussion of placing luxury products in tennis broadcasts adds a useful explanation of audience targeting. This meets the task well, though some points are more fully developed than others. The claim that a fan would “definitely buy” a product is broad and would benefit from qualification or evidence, and the view that advertising is simply ignored could be explored beyond skipping online or televised ads. Develop these points with more precise reasoning to make the discussion more consistently convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall shape: it introduces the two positions, discusses each in turn, and ends with your own view and an example. Contrast markers such as “On the other hand” help readers follow the shift between perspectives. However, the first paragraph is very long and contains several functions—background, both views, and the celebrity example—so the progression can feel crowded. Some links are also mechanical or unclear, including “Both groups are right on their own” and the repeated use of “the second group.” Separate the views into clearer paragraphs and use more precise references to connect ideas. A distinct concluding sentence summarising your position would also give the response a stronger sense of completion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “targeted,” “credibility,” “celebrity,” and “advertise,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There is some attempt to use more specific language about audiences and media. However, spelling errors such as “Advertisments,” “costumers,” and “celebrety” are noticeable, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “increase sell,” “film the ad,” and “pay high amount” do not sound natural in context. Repetition of “ads,” “people,” and “product” also limits range. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common combinations such as “boost sales,” “feature a celebrity,” and “pay a large fee.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If someone blindly follows Tom Cruise…” and “if an advertisement contains my favourite person…”. These help express examples and conditions, and the main ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “Every company is always ready spend” needs an infinitive marker (“ready to spend”), while “Such people likes” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “The question is that how costumers are targeted?” has an awkward question structure, and “if there's is” contains an incorrect verb form. Review agreement, infinitives, and clause formation, and proofread punctuation and capitalisation, especially in the final paragraph.
