IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Advertising is the process of diplaying company's products of various kinds to the customers .

It is an easy process of showing produst to customers. The companies show their products to customers to gain attentions.Advertisement can be done through diffrent process .It can be in form of TV ads ,displaying posters to wall and towers .It can be also done through seminars.

Seminars can be done in diffrent schools ,colleges ,universities and also in towns and society.

In seminars you can display your products live to peoples. You can use your products in front of people to get their trust. You also use the process of giving samples. Sample is easy process because in this process people can get the products, use these products to verify either is working according to the ads or seminars that were describing the product. So user can verify its quality free of cost.If it is good user have placed confidence in it and he or she will like to buy the product. When people see new products in others hands thry will also like to check the products. This process leads to purchasing of new producst that incerease the purchasing rate of specific company. On other side, theres are also the disadvanages of adverstising. For displaying the products , we have to spend lot of money that can effect budget. If adversitisement of product has been displaying for a long time, the attention of customers will starting reduce day by day. This is because when the people see the same product for long time their intrest in product will end. This disintresting can effect the purchasing rate of specific company's product. This can cause a loss in budget of company that leads to low sale rate. If we want to have a succesful advertising of products ,we have to take some important steps. For displaying products on wall and high towers ,we can display at some specific distance not on every tower and at small distance at wall.We should noy use very high quality graphics on wall ,we can use average quality so enough that it can display the qualities of product. For seminars, we can call specific person from diffrent organizations ans institutions , because in this we can the specific person can display ythe product in their respectives organization .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response is only minimally focused on the question. It explains ways companies advertise—such as seminars, posters and samples—and describes how samples may build trust, but it does not clearly discuss both stated views: that advertising persuades people to buy and that its ubiquity makes people ignore it. The point that repeated advertising reduces customers’ interest touches on the second view, yet the first view is mostly replaced by a description of promotional methods. There is also no clear, direct statement of your own opinion. To strengthen the response, organise it around the two views, explain why each may be true, and conclude with a definite position supported by relevant reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Some relevant ideas can be followed, including the sequence from product demonstrations to samples, trust and possible purchases. However, the response is not arranged into clear paragraphs, and the long central section moves between methods, effects, disadvantages and recommendations without a clear overall progression. Connections such as “On other side” signal a contrast, but the contrast is not developed as a discussion of the two views in the prompt. Repeated references to “products” and “customers” also make the writing feel circular. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, each viewpoint and your conclusion, and make each paragraph develop one main idea with clear links between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses basic vocabulary relevant to advertising, including “samples,” “trust,” “attention” and “purchasing rate,” and attempts some topic-specific expressions such as “displaying posters” and “quality.” However, vocabulary is repetitive and several word choices or forms make meaning less clear, for example “gain attentions,” “disintresting” and “low sale rate.” There are also frequent spelling errors, including “adverstising,” “diffrent” and “succesful,” which reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for discussing persuasion and audience response, and check spelling and collocations. For instance, describe an advertisement as “capturing consumers’ attention” rather than “gain attentions.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There is some ability to form longer sentences and explain cause and effect, as in “This is because when the people see the same product for long time their intrest in product will end.” However, sentence structures are often repetitive, and errors in articles, agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries occur throughout. Examples include “the attention of customers will starting reduce,” “If it is good user have placed confidence in it,” and “we have to spend lot of money that can effect budget.” These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then use controlled complex forms with clauses such as “because” and “if”; also check articles, verb forms and punctuation when editing.
