IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that advertising is most effective way to persuade people to buy a specific product. On the other hand, various people say that advertising is so common, they become bored and ignore or avoid to see them. From my perspective, advertisement is the popular way to promote the products and increase the sales of particular products. Furthermore, businesses can attract the potential customer through smart advertisements.

To begin with, advertising is most common way to attract the customers and develops a positive image of a particular product in customer mind. The advertisement of a product may change the customer preferences about the current fashion and trends. There are various customers who are class conscious so the businesses target these customers through the advertising campaigns. Nowadays, for businesses to promote product on social media through the advertising aid is more affordable and accessible. Additionally, advertising the products can update the customer’s knowledge about the product description and characteristics.

On the other hand, various peoples feel bored to see too common aid on daily basis. They use different kind of applications to ban these aids on You Tube, Face Book or other social platforms because they want to avoid or skip these aids. Furthermore, people have many other sources through which they can acquire reliable information related to their favorite brands and specific products.

In conclusion, there are many people who do not like to see too much aids or advertisement and feel bored. I strongly believe that advertisement is not the affordable source for business but also a reliable way for customers to get awareness related to product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position, particularly in the introduction and conclusion. The discussion of advertising’s persuasive effect includes relevant points about shaping preferences, targeting status-conscious customers, and informing consumers about products. You also explain that people may skip adverts or use applications to block them. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first view receives more explanation, while the reasons people ignore advertising are brief and the claim that they use other sources for reliable information is not illustrated. Your opinion is present, but the conclusion’s focus on affordability and reliability does not fully clarify how you weigh advertising’s persuasive power against its overexposure. Develop that comparison and support key claims with specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the first body paragraph moves from product image to fashion, social class, social media, and product information without clearly showing how each point supports the main argument. The reference in “They use different kind of applications” is also not fully clear, since “they” could refer to people generally rather than a specific group. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and vary transitions so the progression feels more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “advertising campaigns,” “potential customer,” “customer preferences,” and “reliable information.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, inaccurate word choice and collocation recur, sometimes making the writing sound unnatural: “too common aid,” “class conscious,” and “get awareness related to product” are examples. There is also repetition of “advertising,” “product,” and “customer,” and forms such as “peoples” and “aids” are not appropriate in these contexts. Aim for more precise, natural combinations and use alternatives such as “advertisements,” “consumers,” and “brand awareness” where suitable. Check spelling and standard forms of platform names as well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “because” and “through which,” and the main ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent communication. For example, the opening needs an article in “the most effective way,” and “advertising is most common way” has the same article problem. In “advertising is so common, they become bored,” the clause connection is faulty; use “that” to link the result. Other examples include “develops” where the subject requires “develop,” and “different kind” where a plural form is needed. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence connections, while continuing to practise complex structures with accurate control.
