IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Certain individuals believe that advertising play major role at make us to purchase things whereas, others state that it is common that we just avoid it.Therefore, prior to my decision, both the views are reviewed in the following paragraphs.

Discussing the former view, the foremost argument put forward by the supporters is that advertising is vital for some product which need to know by everyone such as advertise of new phone and houses as well. Furthermore, some ads develop our knowledge and give us many information which we might does not know. As a result, few ads are attractive and with that ad customer can purchase that product which will be beneficial or profitable for makers.

On the contrary, the proponents of the latter notion advocate that advertisment is totally mood spoiler so, many viewer want to avoid it. Ads which is very boring or not entertaining then people might ignore it and do other works when ads are showing. Many people might not give more attention to ads nowadays because they believe it is not interesting. For instance, ads such as food or drinks which they lauched and made an ad of it then people often ignore such ads because they are unknown to this brand and product.

To conclude and offer my opinion, i would firmly bolster the second view rather than the first due to i am also in that side where people ignore ads and i also do not show any interest or attention to this kind of ads. While ads are running, i like to complete other work rather than watching that boring and long ads.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state a clear preference for the second in the conclusion, so the response addresses the main parts of the prompt. However, the position is not fully established until the end, and the supporting ideas remain limited or unclear. For example, the first view is illustrated with new phones and houses, but the explanation of how advertising persuades people is brief. The second view is more directly connected to your opinion, yet the example about unfamiliar food and drink brands does not clearly show why advertising is ignored. Develop each view with a specific explanation or example, and make your position clear in the introduction as well as the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The opening phrases “Discussing the former view” and “On the contrary” help signal the change in perspective, and the conclusion returns to your opinion. This meets the lower-band expectation of an organised response and shows some ability to guide the reader. To make progression more natural and consistent, avoid formulaic or awkward transitions such as “Therefore, prior to my decision,” and connect each example more explicitly to the point it supports. Some sentences within the body paragraphs also repeat the same idea about viewers ignoring ads, so combine or extend these points rather than restating them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “advertising,” “supporters,” “proponents,” “attractive,” and “ignore,” which allows the reader to follow the general discussion. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less clear. Examples include “advertising play major role,” “mood spoiler,” “many information,” and “bolster the second view.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “advertisment” and “lauched” also reduce accuracy. Build a more reliable set of phrases for discussing influence and attention, and check whether each expression sounds natural in context. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish persuasion from simply noticing or avoiding an advertisement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “whereas,” “which,” and “because.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to read. For instance, “advertising play major role at make us to purchase” has problems with subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, while “Ads which is very boring … then people might ignore it” has agreement and clause-structure errors. There are also issues with articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, as in “give us many information” and “Therefore … reviewed … paragraphs.” Practise building accurate basic sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check agreement, verb forms, and punctuation.
