IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There are two types of people whom had their own opinion and point of views. Some peple thought that advertising is a best way at persuading us to buy things.while, others thought that it was a common process and they did not pay attention to it.I think advertising is the unique method to attract customers in their shopes, offices, restaurants etc. On the one side,Some people giving satisfactory opinion about advertised products. Some people advertise their products and mentioned prices with each to each variety so, customers can easily buy things from that shope.for example, if a shop gave 50% discount on winter collection they would definitely advertise a video or hired a model or actor for the quick sale news and this way gaves a huge profit to owner. On the other side, Some people did not pay attention to it and considered a common way to attract customers. some of these gave very unsatisfactory views because they thought that the shop keepers always launched sale on second hand stuff and after a few weeks, the cloth which they bought from sale were completely vanished their colour becomes dry and the stuff were printed on it were removing.among half of the customers remained their views the same. From my perspective, it is an easy way to accomodate and the quick end of their variety and i also give positive views on this side because it also shows the price of products and their stuff apart from that, it opened their comment section site for the feed back of their customers. Overall, this is the right way

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state your own position, particularly when you say advertising is “the unique method to attract customers” and later support its usefulness. The discount example gives some relevant support for the view that advertising can increase sales. However, the opposing view is presented mainly as complaints about the quality of sale items, rather than explaining why people may ignore advertising because it is so common. Your own opinion also shifts: you favour advertising, but the final paragraph introduces customer feedback without clearly connecting it to your argument, and “Overall, this is the right way” is too vague to conclude the discussion. Develop each view more directly and explain your position consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, paragraphs for the two views, your perspective, and a brief conclusion. Phrases such as “On the one side,” “On the other side,” and “From my perspective” help signal the stages of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is often unclear, and some links are mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the paragraph about people who disregard advertising moves from their general attitude to complaints about faded clothing without clearly showing how these points connect. The final paragraph also combines several ideas—convenience, selling stock, prices, and feedback—without a clear sequence. Use topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the view it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “persuading,” “discount,” “customers,” and “comment section,” and the reader can generally identify your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “satisfactory opinion about advertised products,” “quick sale news,” and “the quick end of their variety”; these do not express the intended meanings naturally. Spelling errors such as “peple,” “shopes,” “accomodate,” and “feed back” also reduce accuracy. Build a bank of natural advertising-related phrases, such as “influence purchasing decisions,” “promote a sale,” and “attract potential customers,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional example beginning “if a shop gave 50% discount,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries are frequent enough to make some passages hard to read. For instance, “Some people giving satisfactory opinion” lacks a finite verb, while “this way gaves a huge profit” has an incorrect verb form. The sentence about clothing also shifts between plural and singular forms and contains several clauses joined without clear punctuation. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add subordinate clauses with correct tense and agreement. Use full stops to separate complete ideas.
