IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

While many people believe that advertisements can successfully influence the customers to purchase products, there is also large group of individuals who think that they are not effective anymore. This essay will further discuss to what extent advertisement campaigns are successful now and establish a stand based on the discussion.

Advertising, paired with a good strategy and a great product, can generate a huge number of sales. People still look forward to promotional content to know about a new product. However, people have grown smarter than before in judging a product as information availability has increased significantly. A recently launched Xiaomi phone has become very popular among tech enthusiasts. It has a strong build quality and Xiaomi highlighted it during their promotional events. But, instead of believing the producer blindly, customers cross-checked the claim and proceeded to buy the phone which eventually brought Xiaomi a lot of sales.

Even though some promotional campaigns become successful, a significant number of them are failing lately. Regardless of product quality, promotional content that have nothing unique or innovative in them can't draw consumers' attention. The main reason behind this is that advertisements are abundant in our surroundings nowadays. Without any uniqueness to offer, Many advertisements can't rise above others. The survival strategy based mobile game advertisements on social media are a prime example of it. All of them have the same type of content, which is boring. Instead of drawing people attention, they become irritated by these content.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that despite the failure of many promotional events, with proper strategy and a good product on offer, advertisements can still be successful.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear opinion: advertising can still work when it is supported by a good strategy and product. The Xiaomi example helps explain how promotion can attract interest while consumers also verify claims, and the mobile-game example illustrates why repetitive advertising may be ignored. This covers the task well overall. However, the first view is not always sharply distinguished from the role of product quality and customer research, and the second view would benefit from explaining more directly how constant exposure causes people to stop noticing advertisements. Develop these links and extend each example’s relevance to the question to make the discussion more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from effective advertising to less effective, repetitive campaigns is easy to follow, and phrases such as “However” and “Even though” signal contrast. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. Some connections are less precise, though: the Xiaomi example moves from promotional events to customers checking claims without fully explaining how this demonstrates advertising’s persuasive power. In the second body paragraph, “Without any uniqueness to offer” repeats the preceding point rather than advancing it. Use clearer links between each example and its main claim, and vary transitions so cohesion feels less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “promotional content,” “consumers’ attention,” “innovative,” and “abundant,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “cross-checked the claim” and “rise above others.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “a huge number of sales” is less natural than “a large volume of sales,” while “draw people attention” and “irritated by these content” are not well formed. “Promotional events” is also not the most precise term for advertising campaigns in the conclusion. Aim for more natural collocations and check possessive forms and countability when selecting vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the concession structure “Even though some promotional campaigns become successful” and the conditional phrase “Without any uniqueness to offer.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement and articles: “there is also large group” needs an article, and “promotional content that have” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “All of them have the same type of content, which is boring,” the reference of “which” could be clearer. Review agreement with uncountable nouns and plural subjects, and proofread sentence punctuation and capitalization, including the capitalized “Many” after a comma.
