IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is believed by a few individuals that advervisements are extremely sucessful way to persuade people to buy things, while others argure that now people do not pay attention in advertisements because it is so common. In this essat I with discuss the both views and give my own point of view.

On the one hand, advertising is good way to persuade people to buy things. To elaborate the former viewpoint, sometimes people do not know about products of good company They buy products of a very poor quality which is not used by them after buying them. If people watch advertisements of the products it can be easy for them to buy good products. For instance, there are many products available in the markets, such as skin products. It is quite difficult for people to choose good products. So, if they watch advertisements they are attracted by the products. In addition, they are egar to buy the products.

On the other hand, in this digital era, people are no longer pay attention to the advertisements. To make it more clear, there are too much false information on the internet about products that is why some people cannot believe on the advertisements. For example, many people make fake accopunts on the internet and posted false claims on their accounts for advertising of their products. What is more, people are too busy in their works so that they use their mobile phones for a very short time so they do not watch advertisements.

In conclusion, although advertisements are helpful for us however, I believe that people do not watch because of false information about proctucts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a personal position, so the response is relevant to the question. The first body paragraph explains that advertising can introduce people to products and influence their choices, while the second presents distrust of online claims and limited attention as reasons people may ignore adverts. However, these points are only partly developed: the example of skin products does not show clearly how advertising persuades people to buy, and the claim that people use their phones for a short time is not fully connected to advertising exposure. Your conclusion says adverts are helpful but then focuses on people not watching them, leaving your overall view somewhat unclear. Explain each view more fully and state a consistent opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. Within paragraphs, however, progression is sometimes mechanical or unclear. For example, the link between buying poor-quality products and advertising good products needs a clearer explanation, and “So, if they watch advertisements they are attracted by the products” repeats the preceding point rather than extending it. Some references, such as “the former viewpoint,” are less direct than necessary. Use clearer links between each claim and its example, and make the conclusion follow logically from the position established in the introduction.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “advertisements,” “products,” “false information,” and “persuade.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “digital era” and “false claims.” However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “advervisements,” “sucessful,” “argure,” “egar,” and “proctucts.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “believe on the advertisements” and “advertising of their products.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause, although the general meaning remains understandable. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations, for example “believe advertisements” or “trust advertising,” and vary repeated uses of “products” with precise alternatives where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures (“If people watch advertisements…”) and a contrast clause in the introduction. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as longer sentences. Examples include “people are no longer pay attention,” where the verb form is incorrect, and “there are too much false information,” where agreement is faulty. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention: “advertising is good way” lacks an article, and “products of good company They buy” needs punctuation between the sentences. These problems can make some relationships harder to follow. Practise accurate subject–verb patterns, articles, and punctuation, then build longer sentences from those reliable forms.
