IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In this contemporary society, a section of individuals believe that advertisements play a crucial role in compelling people to purchase various items. On the other hand, another section argues that advertisements are prevalent nowadays thus they should be ignored. I completely argue that the adverts have a profound influence in people on the grounds of its presentation which has the ability to drag the attention of people. They can successfully convience the people by justifying the needs of item even if it is unwanted.
In recent times, adverts are presented in a very fasinating mode which attract people towards the product. the ultimate aim of advertisements are to elevate the sales of the item. Moreover, exaggeration of item alongside with exceptional presentation are the business skills of the companies inorder to increase their sales. For instance, it is prevalent that celebrities present the adverts of jewellery, motor vehicles and food items. Such adverts certainly influence individuals and those who follows the celebrities purchase the item even if they don't want. This will significantly boosts the business of companies through considerable rise in sales.
However, some could be argued that there is no need to pay attention to adverts as they are common. The main motivation behind it is owing to the numerous number of adverts in te market. In past times, there were merely few adverts are there and everyone address those one. In spite of that, in this current society it is notable that the number of advertisements rapidly grow. Furthermore it is noticeable that most of them have the same pattern which are non attention seekers.
In conclusion, advertisement are successful at forcing people to purchase certain things through great presentation which is a global trend

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state a clear preference for the view that advertising persuades people, especially through presentation and celebrity endorsements. The example of followers buying products they do not need is relevant and helps explain your position. However, the opposing view is less fully developed: you mention the large number of adverts and their similar patterns, but do not explain clearly how this causes people to ignore them. The conclusion repeats your position but does not acknowledge or weigh the two arguments. To strengthen the response, explain the mechanism behind each view and develop the comparison—for example, distinguish between familiar, repetitive adverts and targeted or memorable campaigns.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. This makes the overall line of argument easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “Moreover,” and “However” help show relationships between ideas. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear, though. In the second body paragraph, “In spite of that” does not clearly express the relationship between past and present advertising, and “those one” makes the reference difficult to follow. The final paragraph is brief and does not bring the two sides together. Use linking phrases that precisely express contrast or cause, and make references explicit; then add a concluding sentence that synthesises both views.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “prevalent,” “exaggeration,” “presentation,” and “considerable rise in sales.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “convience” should be “convince,” “fasinating” should be “fascinating,” and “drag the attention” is not a natural expression. Phrases such as “the numerous number of adverts” and “non attention seekers” are also awkward or unclear. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than overly formal wording. For instance, use “attract consumers’ attention,” “a large number of advertisements,” and “similar in style” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which,” “even if,” and “through,” and the main message remains understandable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “the ultimate aim … are” should use a singular verb, while “those who follows” needs a plural verb. The sentence “In past times, there were merely few adverts are there” combines incompatible structures; a clearer version is “In the past, there were only a few adverts.” There are also punctuation and capitalisation slips, such as beginning a sentence with lowercase “the.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, then review agreement and article use, especially in longer sentences.
