IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people say that advertising can influence the consumers to purchase, however, other people would ignore advertisements and skipp them everytime. I strongly agree that advertisements could be a repetitive strategy that the common populace are ignoring.

Overall, advertisements have contents that could really encourage viewers to buy. Promoting something could be successful at times, however, there would be instances where people tend to be uninterested anymore because of the pursuasiveness approach of a certain advertisement. On the other hand, there are also sevral people who will be interested on the products especially if the advertisement is very catchy, meaningful and will really stick to the minds of the people.

I personally believe that advertising a product through television and through online platforms could pursuade the people to purchase the item that is being advertised, but not all the time. Several people believe that promoting something through media could be unrealistic and relatively promising. For example, when promoting a food in TV commercials, photographs that are being shown could make the person watching drools and make him or her run to the restaurant to buy. However, the real appearance and the taste of the food could be different and too good to be true.

In conlusion, advertisements could help the organizations to successfully turn a viewer to a succesful buyer. However, there are also several costumers who cannot easily be pursuaded by the advertisements. Having said that, advertisements could be a big factor on the success of a product and the company as a whole, but it has to be very close to the heart of the public and the one that people could relate to.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear personal position: you acknowledge that advertising can attract buyers, while arguing that repeated exposure leads some people to ignore it. The food-commercial example also supports the point that advertising can persuade, yet create unrealistic expectations. This is relevant coverage of the task. However, the two views are not developed equally: the idea that people ignore advertising is stated in the introduction and conclusion but receives little explanation or a specific example in the body. Your discussion of persuasive advertising is more developed, though the example could be linked more explicitly to why viewers act on it. Develop the less-supported view and explain the reasoning behind your opinion more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally remain on the topic. Connectors such as “On the other hand,” “For example” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between points. However, progression is not always clear: the second paragraph introduces both the persuasive and the ignored-advertising views without establishing a distinct focus, and the next paragraph shifts to your opinion and example. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “However” and “there are also.” Organise each body paragraph around one main view, then use clearer references and transitions to show how each point supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “persuasiveness,” “catchy,” “unrealistic” and “relate to,” and the reader can understand your main ideas. There are also attempts to express nuance, such as saying advertising works “but not all the time.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “interested on the products,” “pursuasiveness approach” and “turn a viewer to a succesful buyer.” Spelling errors such as “skipp,” “sevral,” “conlusion” and “costumers” are noticeable. These issues limit precision and make the vocabulary less controlled. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “interested in a product” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “I personally believe … but not all the time” and a conditional-style example about food advertising. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “the common populace are ignoring” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “could make the person watching drools” uses an incorrect verb form after “make.” The opening sentence also joins two independent clauses with a comma before “however,” which needs stronger punctuation. Articles and prepositions are sometimes awkward, as in “interested on the products.” Review agreement, verb patterns after causative verbs, and punctuation around linking adverbs, while continuing to vary sentence structures.
