IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some people's view advertising is very effective in convincing public to buy things. However, certain people disagree with this notion as they believe it to be very common and ineffective. Although I am in favour of the earlier arguement, nevertheless, I will shed light on both the views.

Firstly, a certain number of people think that advertising is the key to persuade people to do more shopping. In their opinion, advertising such as online adds are the foremost tool for convincing people. Nowadays due to the advent of social media people are exposed to all kinds of contents and so are very fond of content creators. For instance, advertisements involving social media stars attract more eyeballs and trust especially from the younger generation, resulting in increased sales regardless the product.

On the contrary, some people oppose the latter view and believe that advertisements have become so common that people no longer heed a ear to it. In their opinion, the general public is now bored of these recurrent ads displaying the same motive over the years without any modification. Another reason is the frequent scams associated with advertisements which have made people less inclined towards wathing them

My point of view is consistent with the earlier opinion that online adds are the best form of marketing all over the world. The better the marketing strategy will be the more results it will produce. The reason for this is that the youth is very familiar with the internet and because of this belonging they tend to rely on it for all kinds of shopping.

To conclude, although, some people do think advertisements as a waste of resources but a majority are in favour of the notion that good profits are relied on good marketing. I also firmly believe that advertisements are a thing for the future and are a go to strategy for business owners to sell more products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position clearly: you favour advertising’s persuasive effect, particularly online marketing. The examples about social-media personalities attracting younger consumers and repeated advertisements causing boredom are relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The first view receives a specific explanation and example, while the opposing view relies on broad claims about repetition and scams without showing how these reduce attention or influence purchasing. Your conclusion also introduces the idea that “a majority” supports good marketing, which is not established in the discussion. Develop each view with a clearer explanation and a more precise example, and keep the conclusion closely tied to the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “Firstly,” “On the contrary,” and “To conclude” helps readers follow the discussion. However, some linking is mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always smooth. For example, “Although I am in favour of the earlier argument, nevertheless” uses two contrasting signals together, while “My point of view is consistent with the earlier opinion” repeats the position rather than advancing the reasoning. The reference to “the latter view” is also confusing because it does not clearly identify which view is meant. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect each explanation directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “persuading,” “social media,” “recurrent ads,” “scams,” and “marketing strategy.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common expressions show an effort to vary your language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “online adds,” “attract more eyeballs,” “heed a ear,” and “good profits are relied on good marketing.” Spelling slips such as “arguement” and “wathing” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise combinations rather than translating expressions directly; for example, say that advertisements “attract attention” or that consumers “pay attention to” them. Proofreading would help you correct spelling and repeated use of “ads.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “although,” “because,” and “which,” and your meaning is generally understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as the explanation that social-media content exposes people to advertisements. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns remain. In “Although I am in favour …, nevertheless,” the two contrast markers make the structure faulty; “people … no longer heed a ear to it” has an article and construction problem; and “The better the marketing strategy will be the more results it will produce” does not form the intended comparative pattern correctly. There are also punctuation issues, including the comma after “although” in the conclusion. Practise accurate comparative structures and review articles, clause connections, and punctuation.
