IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There are many opinions about advertising, while some individuals argue that advertising is extreamly productive at persuading us to purchase things, others believe that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. I will discuss both views, and I think that both views are reasonable.

On the one hand, There are various reasons why people think that advertising is extreamly successful to attract us to buy things. Firstly, nowadays people buy things by watching add in TV or Social media. When people watch a review about products in TV or Social media, they become facinated to buy this. Secondly, When a company produce a new product, they hire a popular person to advertise so that this can spread around the world. For example, Cristiano Runaldo, he is one of the most famous person in the world as a football professional player. Many company hire him by big amount of money offer to make advertising for their companies. This because they belive when this man create vdioe, it will be spread all over the world significantly.

On the other hand, we cannot deny those who argue that nowdays advertising so common people no longer pay attention to it. This because people scroll similar advertising everywhere, which make them furious. Besides, many people do not believe the advertising they say that these are fraud what are seen in the video. This is because many people become cheated by watching advertising. They have seen in advertising about a product that if they purchase, this will be lastin for long time. However, they see that this product get damged after few days. Because of those reasons people seen to be advertising so common.

In conclusion, I argue that many individuals become ttracted to buy products by watching add on TV or social media, while many people think that advertising is so common that they no longer pay attention to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear overall position: “both views are reasonable.” The first body paragraph explains how television and social-media promotions, including celebrity endorsements, can persuade consumers; the second gives a relevant reason people may ignore advertising, namely repeated exposure, and explains distrust through disappointing products. These examples keep the response focused on the question. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The celebrity example takes up space without clearly explaining how it demonstrates successful persuasion, and the conclusion mainly repeats the two views rather than reinforcing your own judgement about why both are valid. Develop the reasoning behind each example and make your final opinion more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the discussion easy to follow. Within paragraphs, you also use “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Besides” to indicate relationships between points. At times, however, cohesion feels mechanical, and some links are unclear or repetitive. For example, “This because” is used to introduce explanations, while the sequence about a product being advertised as long-lasting and then breaking is not smoothly connected to the claim that people ignore advertising. Use a wider variety of linking methods and make the cause-and-effect relationship between each example and its point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to discuss advertising and consumer behaviour, including “persuading,” “purchase,” “advertise,” “fraud,” and “product.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “popular person” and “spread around the world.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less clear. For instance, “successful to attract us” is not a natural construction, and “furious” does not precisely express the likely response to repeated advertisements. Spelling errors such as “extreamly,” “facinated,” and “belive” are noticeable. Build a more precise set of advertising-related expressions and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “while,” “when,” and “because.” This allows you to express reasons and contrasts, and the main ideas are generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and verb forms. The opening sentence joins two complete ideas with a comma, and “When a company produce” has a subject–verb agreement error. Other examples include “Many company hire him” and “these are fraud,” where number and sentence structure need attention. There are also inconsistent capital letters after full stops. Practise checking each sentence for a complete structure, then review agreement and articles; more accurate control of these patterns would make your complex sentences clearer.
