IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Advertising plays an important role in the modern word. It help to persuading people to buy more products by showing their features but some people do not like them and they ignore it.
Some people believe that it may help to widespread the things and engage more people. They purchase more items through it but some people people also irritated by it.
On the other hand, people are influenced by the great adds and these help them to make good decisions about purchase. These adds are made from good images, graphs, visuals and 3d elements that attracts more audience. For example, when a particular brand of sports shoes is prompted by athlete, people are encouraged more to buy the same product. Moreover, advertisements help consumers to introduce new features of products and help them to make decisions about the product. Special offers and discounts also emphasized them to get more attention and sale.
On the other hand, these advertisements have developed the habits in buyers to ignore them.
Consumers watch these advertisements on television, social media, websites, and even transports. These repeating things make the bore and get ride of it. They start blocking online advertisements. It make them aggregated and they become less interesting in this type of ads.
In my opinion, both arguments are true. If the right type of visuals and true relevant topics are use in them, then there will be a chance of more interest of the audience in it. But some people still ignore the right designed campaign but not that one which influence their choice better.
In conclusion, marketing campaign influence audience and lasting impact on consumer shaping behavior, but its exposure can also play role in the ignorance of them. So they would be more appealing and relevant,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and give a personal position, so the response is relevant to the question. The discussion of advertising’s persuasive effect includes useful examples, such as an athlete promoting sports shoes and discounts attracting consumers. However, the first view is not explained as clearly as the second, and some points remain general—for example, “help to widespread the things” does not specify how advertising persuades people. Your opinion that both arguments are true is present, but the final point about well-designed campaigns influencing choices is difficult to interpret. Develop each view with a clearer explanation and make your own position more precise and consistent.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, separate discussion of the two views, an opinion paragraph and a conclusion, which gives it some organisation. Examples are generally placed near the ideas they support. However, progression is not consistently clear: “On the other hand” introduces the persuasive view and then appears again before the view about ignoring advertisements, making the relationship between points confusing. Some sentences also connect ideas loosely, such as the shift from discounts to consumers ignoring ads. References such as “them,” “it” and “these” are sometimes unclear. Use more precise linking phrases and refer explicitly to advertisements, consumers or campaigns so the reader can follow each point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “features,” “discounts,” “consumers,” “visuals” and “campaign,” and the examples show an attempt to discuss advertising specifically. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make ideas difficult to understand. Phrases such as “widespread the things,” “the great adds,” “make the bore” and “get ride of it” are not natural in this context; spelling errors such as “adds” for “ads” also reduce clarity. Repetition of “people,” “product” and “advertisements” further limits flexibility. Build a bank of accurate collocations, such as “promote products,” “capture consumers’ attention” and “become accustomed to advertising.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional phrasing (“If the right type of visuals…”) and a relative clause (“that attracts more audience”). However, errors are frequent and sometimes make the intended meaning hard to follow. Examples include “It help to persuading,” where the verb pattern and agreement are incorrect, and “These repeating things make the bore,” where the sentence structure is faulty. There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “elements that attracts” and “topics are use,” as well as unclear sentence boundaries and punctuation in the conclusion. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, verb patterns after “help,” and complete sentence structures before adding more complex clauses.
