IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In the era of digital world and modernization, it is extremely difficult to stay away from advertisement. It is often believed that people are easily manipulated by marketing strategy of the companies to buy their products while some argue that advertisement are part of day today life and it is often ignored. In this esay, I will delve about both the views and I strongly believe that people are generally persuaded by the commercials and are compelled to do unnecessary purchases.
Firstly, due to extensive use of social media and digital platforms seeing adverstisement is unavoidable. It often tends to create a demand in the mind of the consumer by showing diiferent algorithms accessing their browing history. For instance: if a person is looking for skin problems solution, the algorithms will automatically detect the need of skin products and shows repeated commercials related to skin care products. This will persuade customers to buy the products which might not work on them.
On the other hand, people who are not on social medial or donot have access to digital platforms are often less bothered buy the commercials. They often ignore the fact that it is persuading them to buy the products.
In conclusion, advertisement are playing major roles in creating demand and supply roles. Gorvernment should work on to control the adverstisement of unneccessary products that are harmful to the health.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You present a clear opinion that advertising can persuade people to make unnecessary purchases, and your example of targeted skincare adverts is relevant and helps explain this view. However, the discussion is only partial: the opposing view is represented mainly by saying that people without digital access are less bothered, rather than explaining how advertising’s constant presence can make audiences ignore it. The conclusion also shifts to government control instead of bringing both views together. The ideas are therefore limited and unevenly developed. The response is also 20 words below the required minimum, which leaves less space to develop the second view and support your position. Explain both perspectives more fully and connect your conclusion directly to them.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph beginning “Firstly,” a contrasting paragraph introduced by “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. This makes the overall arrangement easy to follow. The example about skincare adverts also gives the first main paragraph a clear line of development. However, the second view is brief and does not progress beyond one point, while the conclusion introduces government regulation without a clear link to the preceding discussion. Some linking is mechanical, and the opening sentence of the second body paragraph does not clearly explain how people’s lack of digital access relates to ignoring advertising generally. Develop each side in a separate, balanced paragraph and use clearer links between claims, examples, and your final opinion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “marketing strategy,” “consumer,” “algorithms,” “commercials,” and “persuade,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “create a demand in the mind of the consumer.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, including “adverstisement,” “diiferent,” “browing,” and “neccessary.” Some collocations are awkward or unclear, such as “day today life,” “skin problems solution,” and “creating demand and supply roles.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. Build a bank of accurate advertising-related collocations and proofread spelling; for example, use “everyday life,” “a solution to skin problems,” and “influence purchasing decisions.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional example: “if a person is looking for skin problems solution, the algorithms will automatically detect…” This shows an effort to explain cause and effect, and the main message is generally understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “advertisement are” should use a plural noun with a matching verb, and “the algorithms … shows” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The phrase “people … donot have access” also needs correct verb spacing and form. The final sentence, “Government should work on to control,” has an awkward grammatical pattern. Review agreement and article use, and practise accurate complex sentences so that your range is more consistently controlled.
