IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is an argument that whether advertisment are successful in convincing people to buy product or it is just a ordinary thing to which no one pay attention. Both views will be discussed in this essay. In my opinion it is so common that we no longer pay attention to it.
Some advertisments or promotions are strong enough that general populace fall in trap. Especially, the advertising agencies who introduce the familiar faces like that of influencers or celebrities are playing with the minds of people. Such kind of promotions are so strong that persuade the people to buy the particular product. People believe that if the famous person are buying or promoting the product it must have something special in it. They do not even think that they are promoting it because they are paid for this. For instace, if a celebrity is doing promotion of samsung it does not mean that he himself is using it.
In contrast, some people think that they are so common that no one pay attention to it. It is true in a sense that these promotions or advertisments are everywhere on blilboards, television or social media so no one cares about it. It is hard for the people to trust on such products.
I also firmly believe that the adds are so ordinary that no one takes it serious. I am not a person who buy product merely by seeng and add or promotion. I have trust issues so I only prefer the products which I am using and has 100% confidence about it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: advertising can persuade people, but you believe its ubiquity means people often ignore it. The celebrity example gives relevant support to the first view, while the references to advertising on billboards, television and social media relate to the second. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The second view is asserted rather than explained in depth, and the conclusion relies mainly on your personal buying habits rather than showing why advertising generally has little effect. Develop each side with a clearer explanation or a specific example, and make your final position more fully reasoned.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a final paragraph stating your opinion. Phrases such as “In contrast” help signal a change in viewpoint, and the ideas are generally understandable. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and some links are repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “advertising” and “promotions.” The final paragraph also repeats the opinion from the introduction without drawing the discussion together. Improve the flow by linking each example explicitly to the claim it supports and by using a concluding sentence that synthesises both views rather than simply restating your personal preference.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “advertising agencies,” “influencers,” “celebrities,” and “promoting,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “playing with the minds of people.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “fall in trap,” “trust on such products,” and “takes it serious.” Spelling errors such as “advertisment,” “instace,” and “blilboards” are noticeable. Build a more precise range of advertising-related expressions and check spelling and collocations; this will make your meaning clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “if a celebrity is doing promotion,” and most of the main ideas remain understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence structure, agreement, articles and verb forms. For example, “whether advertisment are successful” has faulty clause structure and agreement, while “no one pay attention” and “the famous person are buying” do not match subject and verb. The sentence “I only prefer the products which I am using and has 100% confidence about it” also has unclear agreement and reference. Practise building accurate complex sentences and check each clause for a clear subject, verb and matching pronouns.
