IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Well the topic sentence is consist of two ideas. The first idea states that advertising is extremely succesful at persuading us to buy things while the second idea smoothly sounds that advertising is so common and we no longer pay attention to it.
People having first idea says that advertising is the important part of bussiness and it regulates the sales at a great surface. Through advertisments the subject become kind of fashion for the people and it increase the day end sales of the company. Moreover, advertisments also provide information about uses and advantages of the object. Doing advertisements mentioned at different plateforms makes the thing alive in the minds and ultimately cause people to buy it.
On the other hand people with second idea states that advertisements are so common that we no longer pay attention to them. According to second idea advertisement no longer make any impact on the minds. People just skips them and move on to their priorites. The advertising become advance with the pessage of time. Digital advertisements are also nowadays by companies but they have no use. Now people donot have enough time to just sit and watch the advertisements. They just skip them and pay zero attention.
At the end both these groups have their own ideas and thinkings. Keeping in view the aspects of both these groups I would like to support the first idea that advertisement plays an important role in regulating the sales ratio. This is because I think that advertisement allows the object to become known to humans and ultimately their mind will be attracted by it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views and state your own position clearly at the end: you support the idea that advertising helps regulate sales. Relevant points include advertising making products familiar and providing information about their uses and advantages. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The claim that advertising increases sales is repeated, while the opposing view is asserted rather than explored; for example, “they have no use” is not supported with a specific explanation or example. Your opinion also needs fuller reasoning, such as explaining how repeated exposure or product information influences purchasing decisions. The opening mainly restates the prompt instead of introducing the issue in your own terms. Develop each side with a clear explanation and a concrete example to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “At the end” help signal the stages of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and several points repeat rather than build on one another. For instance, the second-view paragraph says people “just skip” advertisements and later repeats that they “just skip them and pay zero attention.” Some linking phrases are awkward or mechanical, and references such as “the subject” and “the thing” are not always clear. Organise each body paragraph around one main claim, then explain and illustrate it, using more precise referencing and fewer repeated statements.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “advertisements,” “sales,” “digital advertisements,” and “advantages,” so the reader can follow the general discussion. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less natural: “sales at a great surface,” “the subject become kind of fashion,” and “regulating the sales ratio” do not express the intended ideas clearly. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “succesful,” “bussiness,” “advertisments,” and “priorites.” Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “boost sales,” “become fashionable,” and “influence purchasing decisions.” Proofreading spelling and choosing words that fit the context would make your argument clearer and more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “that.” Nevertheless, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in basic sentence patterns as well as in more complex attempts. Examples include “The topic sentence is consist of two ideas,” “People having first idea says,” and “The advertising become advance.” These show problems with verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. Other examples include “it increase the day end sales” and “People just skips them,” where the subject and verb do not agree. Some sentences remain understandable, but the repeated errors make the writing less fluent. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete sentence patterns before adding more complex clauses.
