IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Whether advertising will persuade you to buy things or you are not going to buy any product, it depends upon many factors. Let us discuss both views one by one.Adverstising can become very successful when a company is going to lauch a new product .Now, if product is actually good and has a lot of useful features, the advertising actually might attract a lot of people. Now, there is another point which needs to be explained. How an advertisement is made, it plays a very important role as well. For example, if an advertisement is boring, without any proper script and good editing,it might be unsccessful to get attention of customers.

But, we cannot deny this fact that , even today everybody knows how marketing works, advertisement brings a lot of profit to businesses.

if we talk about the other perspective, it is also true to some extent that, nowadays, everybody knows that companies advertise their products through different social media platforms. They regularly offer different deals and discounts. Now, we understand this thing that these discounts and deals are just tricks to make us buy products. So, most of the time, we just ignore the ads no matter how good they are.And specially if we watch that specific advertisement daily.

Now, In my opinion, an advertisment can be extremely successful only if it actually worth it. It heavily depends on the nature of product and the benefits for the customers associated with it. You cannot claim or guarantee that every advertisement will be exremely successful. And people are going to buy products blindly after watching the ad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both perspectives: advertising may attract buyers when a product has useful features and the advert is engaging, while frequent promotions can lead people to ignore ads. Your opinion is also present: advertising works when the product offers genuine value. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view receives an example about a new product, but the second is mostly asserted through general comments about social media and discounts. The position could also be clearer and more consistent: the opening says effectiveness depends on many factors, while the conclusion narrows this to whether the product is worthwhile. Explain how these factors influence purchasing and support each view with a more specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure, moving from one view to the other and then to your opinion. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these sections, and signposts such as “But” and “if we talk about the other perspective” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and linking phrases are repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Now.” The sentence beginning “How an advertisement is made” is awkwardly connected to the preceding point, and the standalone paragraph about marketing and profit interrupts the discussion rather than developing either side. Group related ideas more deliberately and use clearer references and transitions to show how each example supports your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “useful features,” “social media platforms,” “deals and discounts,” and “customers.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “proper script” and “nature of product.” However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which makes parts of the argument less natural. For example, “advertisement brings a lot of profit to businesses” does not clearly express how advertising persuades consumers, and “worth it” is informal for this essay. Spelling errors such as “Adverstising,” “lauch,” and “unsccessful” are noticeable. Aim for more precise terms for consumer behaviour and advertising effectiveness, and proofread spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if a product is actually good” and a contrast introduced by “But.” These attempts help express relationships between ideas, but control is inconsistent. Some sentences have faulty or incomplete structures, as in “How an advertisement is made, it plays a very important role,” while “an advertisment can be extremely successful only if it actually worth it” is missing a verb. Article use and sentence boundaries also need attention: “if product” should be “if the product,” and several sentences run together without spaces after full stops. Capitalisation after sentence breaks is inconsistent. Review sentence construction, articles, and punctuation so that complex ideas are expressed clearly.
