IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people are of opinion that advertisements influence consumers in buying products. However, other people believe that advertising became very common and are not effective any longer to have attention from the buyers. I think advertising still has a lot of influence on shopping.

People buy things not only because they need them but also becuase of the artificial demand created by the companies. The advertising agencies work for the companies to study human psychology and use that knowledge to convince buyers in using their products. The advertisements also cast celebraties to influence their followers in using same brands and products including luxury items. For example, a football player who is shown wearing a pant or a pair of boots of a certain brand can influence the fans doing the same. This is how people gets manipulated in buying products through the advertisements.

However, advertisement are not always effective to increase sales. One of the reasons is the lack of variation in advertisements that fails to catch attentions of the consumers. Additionally, advertisements could be repeatative and less creative and people may find them annoying. In such cases, people tend to buy things they genuinely need without much influence on their purchasing beheviour.

In conclusion, although some people may not pay much attention to advertisements and buy things without a significant influnece on their shopping trends, I think advertisements play a critical role at persuading most consumers to buy things. That is mainly because of the impact of advertsement on human psychology that dictates the shopping list in many cases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position clearly: the introduction says advertising still influences shopping, and the conclusion reinforces this. The first body paragraph supports the persuasive view with psychological targeting and celebrity endorsements, including a football-player example. The opposing view is also relevant, with repetition and lack of creativity presented as reasons people may ignore adverts. However, this side is less fully developed: the claim that consumers then buy only what they genuinely need is asserted rather than explained or illustrated. Some points, such as advertising “dictating” shopping lists, are broad. Develop the less-supported view with a specific example and explain how it affects consumer behaviour more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that returns to your opinion. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion, and the ideas within the first body paragraph progress from artificial demand to psychological techniques and celebrity influence. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. At times, though, connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This is how people gets manipulated” does not clearly refer back to the full example, and the conclusion repeats the introduction’s position rather than synthesising the two views. Use clearer referencing and vary how you connect and develop points.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant terms such as “artificial demand,” “human psychology,” “consumers,” and “purchasing behaviour.” These choices allow you to discuss both persuasion and the possibility that adverts are ignored. You also attempt less common vocabulary, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “cast celebrities,” “catch attentions,” and “influence the fans doing the same.” Spelling errors, including “becuase,” “repeatative,” and “influnece,” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but more precise phrasing would make it sound more natural. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for advertising and consumer behaviour.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “although some people may not pay much attention” and “that fails to catch…”. Most of the argument remains understandable, and the sentence structures let you explain causes and examples. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “advertising became very common and are not effective,” the verb forms do not agree with the subject; “advertisement are” also has a number-agreement error. The phrase “people gets manipulated” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, while “in using their products” is an awkward grammatical pattern. Review agreement, articles, and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
