IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Advertising market grows rapidly in last two dacades. Start a day from morning to till sack the bed we saw hundreds of advertisment like holdings, in social media, during watching television or mobile phones and even on goods we used in our daily life. Some individuals prefer advertising in every aspects to purchase things and other belives endorsement as a fake maketing stategies.

As per my perspective, i partially agree with this, as there are students and adults who purchased most of goods (mobile phones, shoes, sports items) and services (travelling pacakages, OTT subscription) which are recommended by their favourite celebrities and social media influencers. They believe that celebrities consume or use the same things which they are actually endorse. However some role model follow ethics and promote only the useful and necessary things.

But at the same time individuals or old generation belives advertising as a maket stategy, which company or firm hires trending role models to increase sale of their products only. As celebrities and sports persons are a paid actors getting a huge amount to promote things via direct or indirect marketing breach trust amongs consumers. As we saw they enjoying tobacco in a short advertisemnt but in real life they follows healthy lifestyle and avoid these products.

As now people are aware by social media posts and videos, they know who is right and what to purchase. If Some fraud happens with them than goverment appoints legal bodies also to maintain consumer interest like consumer court, Fssai, food department and many more.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a personal position, stating that you “partially agree.” The examples of people buying products endorsed by celebrities and of consumers distrusting paid promotions are relevant to the question. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first is illustrated with examples, while the claim that advertising can persuade people is not explained in much depth. Your final paragraph shifts towards consumer awareness and government protection, which is relevant but does not clearly extend your argument about whether advertising persuades or is ignored. To strengthen the response, explain how advertising captures attention or influences purchasing decisions, then weigh this against why frequent exposure may make people disregard it. Make your opinion more explicit in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a final point about consumer awareness. Connectors such as “However” and “But at the same time” help signal contrast, and the examples generally appear in relevant paragraphs. At times, though, the progression is less clear. The opening lists places where advertisements appear without linking that exposure directly to the two views, and the final paragraph introduces legal bodies without a clear transition from the preceding point about celebrity endorsements. Some references, such as “they” in the discussion of celebrities and consumers, are not always immediately clear. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main claim and link the conclusion back to your stated opinion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “social media influencers,” “direct or indirect marketing,” “consumer interest,” and “role models.” These choices show an attempt to discuss advertising and consumer behaviour beyond basic terms. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less precise, as in “advertisment,” “maketing stategies,” and “breach trust amongs consumers.” Some collocations are also awkward: “advertising market grows” and “increase sale of their products” do not sound natural in context. Aim for accurate, conventional combinations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording for the two positions—such as being persuaded by endorsements versus becoming desensitised to repeated advertising—would also help express the task’s contrast clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “as” and “which,” and the main ideas can generally be understood. However, some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “Advertising market grows rapidly in last two dacades” needs a more controlled tense and article structure, while “they enjoying tobacco” and “they follows healthy lifestyle” have incorrect verb forms or agreement. The opening fragment, “Start a day from morning to till sack the bed,” is also difficult to follow grammatically. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check tense and agreement in each clause. This will make your complex ideas easier to read without changing their meaning.
