IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people believes that advertising has influenced the buying behaviour of a customer. While others think that the public has started not to respond to advertisements. Marketing has no influence on the choices of people because advertising is so common nowadays. I will discuss both statements and give my opinion in the end.

In some people opinion, advertisements have a strong influence on the sales of a product. Many companies market their products by placing the information on facebook and commercializing during tv drama ad's. However, some businessman launch their products by paying to a famous actor of a country. Although, people can purchase a product by seeing the advertisements promoted by a actor telecasted in a TV. Some organization market their product by placing it on billboards and also giving information in seminars, conferences and webinars. Social media influencers also promote the product and service owned by a company. Buying behaviour of consumers arelargely influenced by billboards and tv showcasts. A well known brand KFC launch their new food deals by recognizing to the public through billboards. This is one of the reason for the sales of a food chain restaurant. Some marketers promote food service by giving information on a pamphlet distributed to the consumers and discounted deals provided on a specific card of different banks.

In other's opinion, marketing is so common nowadays and it couldnot influence the public. TV ads commercialized by the beauty soap, dishwash, detergent, jelly and biscuit are more common and now people cannot see such marketing and they change the channel during the advertsiements. They also believe that some brands show that the discounts but this is not real. They only change the price and fool the public. This is a way of attraction by marketing the information that discounts are available. Although some people get attracted by this marketing whereas some people donot prefer too buy these brands because they are very expensive.

In my opinion, every individual has its own choices and preferences. Somehow, markething has an influence on the buying of a people. Sometimes, they prefer to buy the product of their own choice. Although, some brands which are well recognized and well known have a good reputation and place in the heart of a people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views by describing ways advertising can influence purchases and arguing that its prevalence may make people ignore it. The examples of celebrity promotion, billboards, and consumers changing channels are relevant. However, the discussion is uneven: the first view receives many examples, while the second is less fully explained, and several examples are listed rather than developed to show how they affect buying decisions. Your own position is also not fully clear. The conclusion says marketing has “an influence” but then notes that people buy according to their own choices, without explaining which view you find more convincing or how the two ideas fit together. State your opinion directly and support it with one or two developed reasons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding paragraph. This helps the reader identify the main sections. However, progression within paragraphs is often list-like, particularly in the first body paragraph, where social media, actors, billboards, seminars, and pamphlets are introduced without a clear sequence or sustained explanation. Some linking is also awkward or repetitive: “Although” begins sentences where no contrast is completed, and “In other's opinion” does not clearly identify whose view is meant. The conclusion introduces the writer’s position but does not bring the discussion together. Organise each body paragraph around one central claim, then explain and illustrate it; use linking expressions only where their logical relationship is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “buying behaviour,” “discounted deals,” “influencers,” and “reputation,” and you attempt a range of advertising-related terms. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “marketing,” “product,” and “people,” while several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “commercializing during tv drama ad's,” “showcasts,” and “recognizing to the public.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “markething,” “advertsiements,” and “couldnot,” also reduce precision. These issues sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Build a more accurate set of collocations for describing advertising and consumer responses, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “While” and “Although,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and verb forms occur in examples such as “Some people believes,” “Buying behaviour of consumers are,” and “KFC launch.” Articles and plurals are also unreliable, as in “a actor” and “some businessman.” Several complex sentences are incomplete or awkwardly joined: “Although, people can purchase a product…” does not form a complete contrast, and “Although, some brands…” has the same problem. These recurring errors can make relationships between ideas unclear. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and use subordinate clauses only when the main clause and intended contrast are complete.
