IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Now a days mostly people liked to buy things online by seeing adds and promotions on mobile phones or TV. The advertisment creat a situation that people are compelled to buy things.
In this modern era people are mostly busy on their phones and labtops for the purpose of office work and entertainment. Now people also like to buy things online and also they are able to order ready made things for eating. These people prefer advertisment of clothes and other kinds of things including food items because they have not much time to go stores or malls to buy such kind of things. They place an order online and receive at home which is time saving for them instead of wasting much time on retails shops.
There are also many people which do not like advertising and to buy online. They think it is very bad thing to order without checking it quality and material. So these kind of people do not focus much on advertisment and they think it is useless. They prefer to go malls and shops for the purpose of shopping and buy tihings by checking their quality.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You address both views to some extent: the second paragraph explains why busy people may respond to online promotions, while the third presents shoppers who distrust buying without checking quality. However, the discussion does not fully answer the question of whether advertising persuades people or is so common that they ignore it. The first view is mainly described as a reason to shop online, and the opposing view focuses on online shopping rather than advertising becoming unnoticed. Your own opinion is also not stated clearly. The response is 58 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop both views and give a supported position. Explain how advertising influences decisions, then state and justify your view.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an opening, a paragraph about online purchasing, and a paragraph about people who prefer physical shops. This helps readers identify the two groups being discussed. However, the overall progression is limited: the opening makes a broad claim, but the body paragraphs do not clearly develop the two specific views in the prompt or lead to a conclusion. Linking is also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “and” and “also,” and references such as “these people” are not always precise. To improve, organise the essay around the two views, use clear topic sentences, and add a concluding paragraph that states your opinion. Use a wider range of accurate transitions to show contrast and cause.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “advertising,” “promotions,” “quality,” and “online,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “people,” “things,” and “buy.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as “advertisment,” “labtops,” and “retails shops,” which reduce accuracy and sometimes make the phrasing awkward. Some expressions are imprecise, for example “ready made things for eating” and “do not focus much on advertisment.” Build a more varied set of topic vocabulary and check spelling. More precise phrases such as “prepared meals,” “pay attention to advertisements,” and “retail stores” would make your ideas clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences, including “They place an order online and receive at home,” and use basic clauses to explain reasons and contrasts. However, the range remains limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response difficult to read. For example, “people liked to buy” does not fit the general present-time meaning, while “The advertisment creat a situation” has errors in verb form and agreement. Other examples include “people which do not like” and “checking it quality and material,” where the relative pronoun and possessive form are incorrect. Articles and sentence construction also need attention. Practise accurate present-tense statements and build complex sentences with controlled clauses, checking subject–verb agreement and pronoun forms.
