IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Significance of advertisement is highly debated topic in the recent years. Some people believe that current methods of advertisement successful in making us to buy items, whereas other argue that we are used to see frequent ads that no longer bother us to think about buying things.

Proponents of success of ads industry over persuading individuals to do the shopping say that advertisement methods adapt with time to get attention from community. As the time changes, technology has evolved and so the ways to advertise. Printing was the most common way to advertise in the past, but advancement in online platforms has resulted in social media advertisement boost. For instance, people use social media to search for gym gears, then same platforms will show a pile of ads related to gears for gym with several discounts and convenience that will attract their attention to buy. Similarly, poeple may use social media for leisure time, ads industry is now adding humorous taste in ads that actually gets attention.

One the other hand, oponents argue that abundance of ads everywhere no longer bother us to buy things. Every platform is no longer ad fre. For instance, if a person is watching any sports video on social platform that contains ads related to sports wear featuring famous athelete, multiple appearance of that ad will not get attention. On top of that, according to some people ads present things in such a way that is not the same in physical shop. For example, ad of burger may feature several delicious sauces but in reallity the restaurent may not offer that results attention loss.

I largely agree with this opinion that ads industry is highly successful in attracting people attention and making them to buy those itmes. Although, advertisement sometime lead to misinformation or may present poor quality goods into a really good products. But checking items before buying it can help in cope up with this issue.

In conclusion, Advertisement is siccessful in pursuading people to buy items, this is mainly due to their new methods on advanced platforms and adaptation with public preferences and eas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You discuss both views and state your position clearly: you largely agree that advertising can attract consumers and prompt purchases. The examples about targeted gym-equipment adverts and repeated sportswear adverts are relevant, and you also acknowledge misleading product presentation. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally. The first view is supported with several explanations, while the claim that people ignore advertising is illustrated mainly through repetition and one example of a burger that differs from its advert. Your final paragraph introduces checking products as a solution, which is useful but not fully connected to the discussion. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely when advertising succeeds and when familiarity or distrust makes it ineffective, and complete the conclusion so it clearly summarises both views and your judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. This makes the line of argument easy to follow, and signposts such as “For instance,” “On top of that,” and “In conclusion” help connect examples to claims. However, some links feel mechanical, and a few references are unclear. In “that contains ads related to sports wear,” the reader must infer whether “that” refers to the video or platform; “that results attention loss” also does not clearly express the relationship between the example and the point. The conclusion is cut off at “preferences and eas,” weakening the ending. Use clearer referencing and transitions that show contrast or cause, and ensure the final paragraph is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “persuading,” “abundance,” “advancement,” “misinformation,” and “preferences.” These choices show some ambition and generally allow the reader to understand your argument. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, word forms, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural: “Significance of advertisement,” “do the shopping,” “a pile of ads,” and “gets attention” are awkward in context. There are also spelling errors such as “poeple,” “oponents,” “fre,” and “siccessful.” Aim for more precise, natural combinations and proofread carefully. For example, use “the effectiveness of advertising,” “make purchases,” and “a large number of adverts” rather than translating phrases directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “whereas,” “that,” and “although,” and most of the argument remains understandable. However, errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb patterns are frequent enough to limit accuracy. Examples include “advertisement successful in making us to buy,” “other argue,” “One the other hand,” and “help in cope up with this issue.” The final sentence is also incomplete, ending with “and eas,” so it cannot be read as a complete grammatical conclusion. Work on complete sentence construction and common patterns such as “make someone buy” and “help someone cope with.” Check articles and subject–verb agreement, and leave time to proofread punctuation and sentence endings.
